South of Chaweng, a series of hills climb high along the island's east coast, forming a natural border between Samui's two best and therefore most developed beaches, Chaweng and Lamai. Steep cliffs drop into the ocean and the winding road that traverses them is one of the island's most challenging and picturesque to drive along. Several resorts line the cliff tops, as well as some of the island's best restaurants; some of them literally perched on the cliff edge, offering fabulous views of the Thai Gulf. Resorts and residential developments are also scattered through the hills above the road, which twists and turns its way down towards Lamai, where yet more development marks the beginning of what is Samui's second largest beach and tourist town.
