41 Lighthouse Street

Pillars, tall archways, exposed beams and a stunning black and white chequered floor celebrate the characteristic Dutch design of this 300-year-old home in the heart of Galle Fort whilst cushioned sofas, vibrant artwork, a courtyard swimming pool, three comfortable bedrooms and a modern kitchen bring it stylishly into the 21st century. This house is particularly sociable, enhanced not only by the many living spaces both indoors and outdoors, but also by the hot pink-lit terrazzo-topped bar in the sala, the large billiard table and the iPod with speakers. Many books, games and DVDs scatter the cabinets and shelves whilst photographs of the owner’s family and friends give the property personality and warmth.

The back garden of 41 is a unique feature in the fort and encompasses a large grassy lawn shaded by swaying coconut palms and furnished with seats and sunbeds. Big enough for a casual game of cricket whilst sufficiently intimate for a candlelit BBQ, this private space really enhances 41’s appeal and prevents it from feeling too enclosed as many houses in the fort can. The swimming pool in the courtyard is ringed by a small garden featuring frangipani, bougainvillea, pot plants and feathery bamboo that hugs the tall walls and overlooks the tiled roof of the cushioned ambalama. The courtyard terrace and the sala inside the house offer even more living space, as does the study with its deeply cushioned sofa seating, so that even individuals within a group can enjoy a bit of privacy.

Strategically placed mirrors make 41 seem larger than it is, and antiques from all corners of the globe give the house plenty of character. The modern kitchen is available for guests to use if they wish, although there is a chef who can shop and cook all meals according to guests’ requests. The staff of three are warm and welcoming, however you can choose to have the house to yourselves in the evening if you wish to enjoy some private time. Galle and its historic fort is right on your doorstep waiting to be explored.

As you enter through a tall teak doorway fringed with a bright turquoise frame, you are greeted by an open-plan hallway with billiard table on your left and study on your right, whilst a gaze inward rewards you with a fleeting glimpse of the teal-coloured swimming pool. Original black and white tiles create a sea of monochrome at your feet and the high ceilings and tall archways highlight 41’s Dutch origins. The size of the billiard room, which is simply furnished with high chairs and tables that wouldn’t be out of place in a bar, is enhanced by a tall mirror. Opposite the billiard room is a cosy study where deep cushioned sofas offer the perfect spot to cosy up in front of the television and watch one of the many DVDs. A large broad desk allows those wishing to catch up on emails a place to sit courtesy of a complimentary WiFi internet connection.

A tall doorway leads into the sala, an elongated space with a lounge at one end and a dining table and terrazzo topped bar at the other. Antiques sourced from many parts of the globe complement the vibrant Sri Lankan paintings that liberally hug the walls. From here three open doorways lead onto a furnished terrace (a great place for relaxing and dining) and a high walled courtyard with cushioned ambalama (Singhalese for resting place) and pool. The building to the right of the pool was added onto the property when it was recently renovated to include a modern kitchen and small bedroom on the ground floor, as well as a further two double bedrooms on the first floor reached by a wooden staircase.

Each of the bedrooms is air conditioned and has a wall of glass windows overlooking the pool to make it very light. Bedrooms have a teak double bed and an ensuite terrazzo moulded bathroom with shower. The Master Bedroom is particularly spacious and comprises a large cushioned lounge, a private balcony overlooking the back garden, stacks of books and photographs and a magnificent deep copper plated tub in the bathroom.
