Villa Ahn

  • Location: Ubud
  • Number of bedrooms: 3
Staying at Villa Ahn gives you the best of many worlds. You are in the unspoiled heartland of Bali but within ten minutes of Ubud and its many attractions. You have all the security of being in a village, but with the luxury of privacy, broad lawns, a large vivid blue swimming pool and 24-hour staff. You have wide vistas of the rice fields being farmed as they have been for centuries, but you also have a 32-inch flat-screen television and a DVD player, air conditioned bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. The ambiance of this alang-alang thatch-roofed villa is nonetheless very Balinese: tranquil and relaxed as staff go about their tasks in the kitchen or putting out offerings or sweeping up blossoms on the lawn with a palm-wisp broom.

‘Ahn’ comes from a Chinese word meaning ‘heart’ or ‘love’, and indeed the open construction of the villa allows the natural energy of the garden and the rice fields beyond to flow through to the heart of the house and suffuse it with the sounds and scents of nature. It is a comfortable, unfussy place, great for sprawling, relaxing together, or escaping with a book. Villa Ahn is also very hospitable thanks to the generous proportions of the house and gardens and the gentle manner of the staff . The calm and good-natured Mrs Kadek cooks all your meals (breakfast is included in the rate and other meals charged to your account) and offers tempting snacks in between. It is perhaps an advantage that the villa is not particularly well set up for work; there’s no desk and the only internet connection presently available is via a USB stick.

With its three queen-bedded ensuite rooms, Villa Ahn is a great solution for a family or couples looking for a quiet, self-contained villa with easy access to the animation of Ubud and many other cultural sites in the area. Nearby are a number of temples with carved stone antiquities. There is also an archaeological museum. Ten minutes’ drive to the north is the small town of Tampaksiring with important cultural sites and crafts markets.

Villa Ahn is a big two-storey villa with two bedrooms downstairs and a master suite upstairs with a broad balcony. The long living and dining area opens onto the garden with large folding glass doors at either end which determine that the overhead fan above the dining area is not likely to be used very often: the village is at a comfortable elevation with pleasantly cool breezes most of the year. The living/dining area is a high-ceilinged space with a traditional thatched roof supported by robust coconut-wood columns. The dining area is dominated by a sturdy round wooden table that seats six but could take eight. Behind is a feature wall; to one side of that is the kitchen, and to the other is a small foyer with Buddha statue, water feature and the staircase. A guest washroom is situated near the stairs. Large daybeds are positioned at either end of the living room and at the far end is the electronic entertainment equipment (32-inch flat-screen TV, DVD player, iPod dock) and several sofas besides the daybed. All the soft furnishings are Indonesian textiles in a pleasing palette of red, brown and rose. The Indochine-style furniture gives the house a substantial feel.

The bedrooms all have queen-sized beds (160cm x 200cm) with mosquito netting, choice of air conditioning or overhead fan, separate wardrobe with safe, and rather elaborate bathroom arrangements. The two downstairs bedrooms have full ensuites with rain shower, WC, and large vanity sinks, plus a separate ‘bathtub room’ with large terrazzo tubs that look vaguely shrine-like. The upstairs bedroom has a smaller bathroom, but with a big bathtub, WC, small vanity sink area, and a separate room for the rain shower. This bedroom’s balcony is furnished with cane chairs and a small tea table. Polished wooden floors throughout the upper storey give warmth and refinement.

The generous swimming pool is the central feature of extensive gardens that stretch into lawns at either end of the house. A large, thatched pool balé provides shelter and sprawling space at one end of the pool, near the barbecue, while sun loungers with umbrellas and small tables flank the vivid-blue waters.
