Akuvara

Akuvara is not a place for traditionalists. The monochrome framed buildings and a heavy emphasis on glass add a contemporary twist to an otherwise natural setting, giving the villa its own distinctive modern ambience. That is not to say guests lose out on the tropical island experience. On the contrary, the entire property gravitates towards the pool and beach beyond, with an attractive beachfront sala (gazebo) adding the finishing touch.

Inside, the villa boasts no less than three separate lounge areas (one of them upstairs with stunning views over the beach), and this allows guests to do their own thing, day and night, if desired. Outdoor options include lazing on daybeds in the sala, on sun loungers by the pool, or dining al fresco on the terrace while drinking in the views. Indoors, the lounge connecting to the pool terrace is a great spot to pass the evening, with its comfortable sofas and large flat-screen TV with plug-in hard drive, fully stocked with the latest films and an impressive music library. The bedrooms have everything you need on a beachside break but are practical rather than extravagant. Having said that, the outdoor tub in the master bedroom certainly adds a little romantic something. A stand-alone building at the rear of the property houses an upper-level bedroom studio with ensuite kitchen, creating options for friends sharing, but overall the villa’s compact layout seems best suited to families and couples.

Two live-in staff cope admirably with everything from cleaning rooms to setting tables, making breakfast and covering basic laundry needs. A full-time chef adds to the indulgent experience - try a succulent seafood barbecue by the pool. A villa manager ensures all runs smoothly.

Lipa Noi south is one of Koh Samui's most secluded beaches. The water is clear and a good depth for swimming and although you can see the ferry pier from the beach, it's far enough away not to cause bother. You can happily spend days doing little more than swimming, lounging and taking a kayak (included) for a paddle around the bay.

From Akuvara’s gated entrance, a long, red-brick drive leads to a central walkway which, in turn, leads down past sleeping and living pavilions to the pool terrace, garden and beach. The villa's design is unashamedly modern, but sandstone bricks and olive detail create a sense of harmony with the natural surroundings. The two-storey living pavilion at the far end of the walkway houses a small, but well-equipped kitchen and two separate lounge areas downstairs, plus a glass fronted ‘sea lounge’ upstairs where two daybeds are positioned to enjoy the stunning views over to nearby islands. The downstairs lounge areas both feature attractive water hyacinth furniture and large flat-screen televisions, and DVDs, connected to the villa’s state-of-the-art music and movie hard drive. At the front of the living pavilion, large sliding doors open onto the spacious pool terrace, where a dining table seats eight, perfect for starlit meals. The 15m blue-tiled infinity pool is a constant daytime draw and features an attractive, Thai-style wooden sala complete with two daybeds facing the quiet beach and sea beyond. The dining room is set in its own pavilion – but easily accessed from the kitchen – and boasts a large wooden table (seating eight) and contemporary Thai artwork on the walls.

Three of the four bedrooms are housed in their own pavilions. All have air conditioning, ceiling fans and televisions and two have king-size beds while the third has twin beds. As well as its king-size bed, the master bedroom - which looks directly out towards the sea – has an indulgent ensuite bathroom with an outdoor stone bathtub, partially shaded from the elements and overlooking a small courtyard and a walkway to the beach. All the other bathrooms have both rain and hand-held showers.

The fourth bedroom (more of a studio) is located on the upper level of the two-storey building at the entrance to the villa, above the carport. With its own kitchen, ensuite bathroom and large, comfortably furnished balcony overlooking the rest of the villa and the sea beyond, this king-bedded suite is perfect for guests who want to be a little more private or self-contained.
