Villa Alang Alang

Alang alang refers to the traditional thatched roofing that accentuates the character of many Balinese villas. Naturally both pavilions at Villa Alang Alang boast this unique roofing, creating a charming effect from both inside and out. Under the roof the simple Balinese charm continues with traditional wood furniture and carvings, plus subtle and attractive lighting. Low-backed rattan sofas, intricately stitched cow hide dining chairs and bar stools all look out over the lush garden, teeming with exotic palms and frangipani trees, which create a tropical paradise around the 12 x 3.5m swimming pool and wood decking.

The two pavilions either side of the swimming pool are almost mirror images, both with a pleasant open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, under the high alang alang ceiling which allows the breeze to flow through. Antique Indonesian doors in each pavilion lead off to an air conditioned master bedroom, and a charming open-air ensuite bathroom. In the main pavilion there is also a second bedroom with a cute open-air bathroom, perfect for children, one person or an intimate couple.

The villa is staffed with a manager, chef and maid. As the owner spends a lot of time staying at Villa Alang Alang, the staff are friendly, speak good English and, like the villa, are charmingly Balinese. The villa itself is well maintained and day-to-day operations run smoothly. The resident chef will shop for you and prepare meals from a suggestion menu.

The rustic charm of Villa Alang Alang is somewhat unique today in Seminyak; a stark contrast to the contemporary minimalist villas that populate this fashionable destination, it maintains a traditional Balinese feel. Situated at the end of a cul-de-sac it is quiet and private, perfect for a family holiday, a romantic retreat, or a base to party and only a short stroll to the famed beach, shops, restaurants and bars in downtown Seminyak: Bali’s iconic bar and restaurant Ku Dé Ta is literally just at the entrance whilst, if you walk up Jalan Laksmana, within minutes you will have passed restaurants offering almost every cuisine in the world as well as a host of charming boutiques.

Two separate carved wooden entrances lead through the garden to each pavilion's open-sided living and dining area making the villa ideal for two couples or a small extended family. This is classic Balinese living: below the high ceiling of the main pavilion, low-backed rattan sofas covered with ikat (hand-woven fabric) throws sit next to a traditional teak cabinet and dining table (seats six), accompanied by a mix of rattan and cow hide dining chairs. The living area houses both a CD player and portable ipod docking system. Cow hide-covered bar stools hug the units at the back of the small open-plan kitchen at the rear of the room. Each kitchen is simple yet has all the essentials and is equipped with an oven, hob and coffee machine. Whitewashed walls are accented with traditional Indonesian teak doors that lead off to the master bedroom, bathroom and (in one pavilion) a second bedroom.

In both pavilions the master bedroom is separated from the garden by glass doors which open out onto a small veranda, equipped with two chairs and a table. The ceiling is also glassed off from the living area to ensure the effectiveness of the bedroom’s air conditioning. A traditional queen bed and cabinet, which houses a TV with 40+ channels and DVD player, are both covered by a large mosquito net. A small console table can double as a desk, next to which a door leads into a large walk-in wardrobe equipped with safe. A second door leads into a reasonably large outdoor bathroom, where the shower and sink units are moulded in terrazzo are accompanied by a wall of orchids. The bathrooms are adorned in sunshine, yet remain private – so long as you remember to lock the door adjoining the living area.

The second bedroom (in one pavilion only) is compact, with a small double bed covered by an attractive mosquito net, a built-in wardrobe and a chair. The room is air conditioned but without a TV. Large windows look out to the pool and garden and another traditional door leads into a cute outdoor bathroom.
