Laksmana Estate - Villa Aliya

Designed by a family from Hong Kong with young children, Villa Aliya is a spacious, inviting home in an idyllic tropical setting. As soon as you enter the villa, you can see just how much love, thought and good taste the owners have put into the design and furnishing of the interiors, with touches such as the charming Javanese blue floor tiles in the kitchen and the old advertising prints on the walls of the upstairs rooms. This home showcases Indonesian antiques that have been fondly collected over a period of time and matched with colourful fabrics and soft furnishings. There are some clever ideas too, such as the standard lamps in the dining pavilion, created from the pillars of an antique carved bale (gazebo).

In common with its trendy locale, Villa Aliya offers plenty of places to entertain, dine, relax and hang out, including a very comfortable, semi open-air living room which faces the pool and backs onto a lush, foliage-covered wall; an upstairs lounge/bar, open on three sides and overlooking the pool and gardens – so you can keep an eye on the kids as they play and splash below; a poolside dining pavilion (great for entertaining), and a large comfy bale perfectly placed for cool moments alongside the pool. If an air-conditioned daytime retreat is sought, the children’s bedroom doubles as a playroom and TV room.

More of the thought and love that has gone into the villa can be seen in the sunny downstairs bathrooms, with rain showers in pebble-floored courtyards open to the sky and bordered by palms and yellow irises. Even the kitchen – where most guests rarely venture – is thoughtfully equipped with all the hi-tech facilities that the chef needs to prepare delicious meals (on guest account), which he does with the same level of care and attention shown by the rest of the villa’s staff of six.

Aliya works beautifully as an easy-living holiday villa with many thoughtful touches to make both adults and children feel very much at home. The centrally positioned pool and the inviting living spaces surrounding it will be hard to leave.

Entering the two-storey Villa Aliya via a pair of antique double doors, you leave the busy world behind. The sense of tranquillity grows as you walk into the large, walled courtyard garden, the centrepiece of which is a 15m swimming pool with a timber deck and a water cascade at one end. A comfortable thatched poolside bale sits next to a delightful dining pavilion furnished with a table for ten. On the ground floor of the main villa building, the semi-open living/dining room is furnished with two big comfy sofas, wicker armchairs, and a dining table with bench seating. Adjacent to this is the spotless kitchen.

An ornately-carved antique timber canopy crowns the 2m-wide bed in the ground-floor master bedroom, while a second, more feminine downstairs bedroom features a four-poster bed draped in snowy netting. Both of these rooms have glass doors leading out to the pool. As well as their pretty courtyard rain showers, the indoor areas of these two bathrooms have freestanding tubs for two, and reproduction antique vanity units complemented by fabrics that match the artwork on the walls. Upstairs is a twin-bedded room with a small ensuite shower room and a balcony overlooking the pool, and a kids’ room with two large daybeds plus trundle beds beneath. The kid’s bathroom is practically fitted out with a tub and handheld shower. There’s also another washroom and wc just off the breezy upstairs landing. All of the bedrooms have TVs and DVD players, are air-conditioned and feature antique furnishings and polished wood floors, scattered with Persian rugs.

The upstairs lounge/bar is open on three sides overlooking the gardens and pool and features a soaring roof above a polished teak floor. Natural breezes and ceiling fans keep this room cool – in fact it can get a bit too breezy on a windy day. At one end are two deeply cushioned daybeds (upholstered in bright, beautifully coordinated fabrics) and at the other end a teakwood bar with stools, a fridge and a liquor selection. The wall behind the bar is decorated with a fascinating collection of old advertising prints.
