Amore Mio
In the 80s and early 90s, typical Bali rental villas – commonly known as ‘bungalows’ – were open on two sides, comprising white-tiled floors, a basic kitchen, a solitary simple bathroom and unplastered brick walls. There was usually a rickety staircase leading to a woven-bamboo-encased bedroom in the roof. Gardens were always gorgeous, but private swimming pools were few and far between, hot water was a rare commodity, feather pillows were scarce, furniture was wobbly, lighting was inefficient, and satellite-channels were hard to find. Air-conditioning, coffee machines and microwave ovens were almost-unheard-of luxuries in the Bali of that era, while DVD players, Wifi internet, and mobile phones had yet to be invented.
There are still a lot of these rustic, old-style homes around, and many of them are being converted into holiday villas; sometimes the overhaul is ordinary, and the modifications minimal, but in the case of Amore Mio, the renovation and the results are remarkable. The name means ‘My Love’ and the Dutch owner – a perfectionist who has worked in the field of fashion and design – has certainly poured his love into this place.
Located an area that was once out in the sticks but is now in the heart of happening Seminyak, perfect for three couples or groups of fun-loving friends, Amore Mio still maintains much of the charm and character of its roots. Yet guests can now look forward to smooth walls, cool black non-slip floors, funky lighting, comfy and stylish furniture, air-conditioned bedrooms, sexy marble bathrooms and steaming-hot monsoon showers. This is further enhanced by a compact but well-equipped modern kitchen, complete with a microwave, a coffee machine, and a cook who will prepare simple meals and shop for groceries (on guest account), as well as inclusive daily housekeeping services. The swimming pool is yet another stunning feature of Amore Mio, as is the home-entertainment system in the living room. In fact, there is a flat-screen satellite-channel TV in every bedroom, and another in one of the bathrooms, so guests can enjoy American Idol while soaking in the tub. How times have changed!

The integrated living/breakfast room and kitchen at Amore Mio covers most of the ground floor of the main building. Characterised by two half-moon glassless windows with fancy wrought iron grills are two sitting areas, one of which faces the 52-inch TV and home theatre system. To the side, next to glass doors that open onto the pool deck, is a circular breakfast table with six chairs, and adjacent to this is a small but modern kitchen with a four-burner gas hob and microwave.
A staircase leads up to the air-conditioned master bedroom, which is furnished with a stylised low-level king bed with a sunken mattress and accessorised with funky lamps. A guest washroom is situated at the bottom of the stairs, and next to this is the master bathroom, a triumph in black marble, fitted with a pair of petrified wood washbasins, fancy taps, and a state-of-the-art Apollo massage shower. Also on the ground floor of the main building is the bathroom that serves the poolside bedroom. It is a dream in cream-coloured marble with an acid-washed non-slip marble floor, rough tumble marble-stacked walls, twin monsoon showers, a free-standing tub, and double vanities with honeycomb-textured marble washbasins.
In the garden, two loungers rest upon a wooden deck beside the 11x 5m swimming pool, which is lined with a stunning slate stone that sparkles with streaks of gold. Here, a single-storey building houses a spacious air-conditioned bedroom furnished with two queen beds, and fitted with glass doors that open directly to pool. A thatched balé relaxation pavilion sits at the other end, while the flat lawn is dotted with palms, flowering trees, and a freestanding hammock bed.
Adjacent to the main building, is an open-sided dining pavilion presenting a magnificent black table with eight stools. From here, stepping-stones over a lotus and fish-filled pond lead to an antique stand-alone wooden house. This charming, colourful building features a high roof and a raised veranda. Inside, the romantic, air-conditioned bedroom is furnished with a king bed, while the ensuite bathroom is fitted with a shower and a glass washbasin.
