Villa Asada

A local lad shins up a coconut tree, cows stand patiently tethered in surrounding fields, dragonflies hover, bamboo penjor hang over the roads to celebrate the latest festival, fishermen cast their nets from the nearby black sandy beaches – welcome to the real Bali. Until 2008 the area around Candidasa was isolated from high pressure tourism by a three and a half hour winding road trip (now one hour with the opening of the Denpasar – KlungKung bypass) resulting in a charmingly traditional feel. The area is still little visited giving Villa Asada and its neighbouring ultra exclusive Amankila and (somewhat less exclusive) Alila resorts a remote and natural peace. Finished in 2008, Villa Asada is perfect for families or small groups looking to escape the rigors of today’s world but enjoy a modern, practical and balanced place to stay.

Perched overlooking the Kalyana Bay, Villa Asada is situated 25m above sea level and approximately 100m from the seashore, where a reef offers reasonable snorkelling. The contemporary-styled villa is comprised of two connected double-storey buildings along two sides of the swimming pool. All four ensuite bedrooms and the open plan common areas get maximum views of the bay and the distant island of Lombok. Vaulted ceilings of Bangkerai and Rattan with Merbau floors and Sirep (Iron Wood) roofing give a solid wood feel throughout. Oversized glassed doors fold back to let in the sound of breaking surf on the reef below, the trickle of the fountains and the gentle whirl of overhead fans. Generous terraces with overhanging roofs ease into lawns which surround the 18m pool providing a practical and enjoyable indoor/outdoor living space. A team of villa staff, which include a chef (groceries will be billed at cost +15%), 24-hour security, maids and servers, are available to guests under the watchful eye of a John and Debbie who can provide extensive information on the local area and the surprising number of things to see and do for both children and adults (car/driver hire is available). It is hard not to relax in this eminently practical, balanced and friendly villa.

The contemporary styled Villa Asada is spread over two double-storey buildings which wrap around an 18m terraced pool. The cavernous common areas in the main building are reached via a short footbridge from the car park guarded by two fierce looking patung. Vaulted fanned ceilings rise high above the formal sitting areas and a dining table for ten and a large open kitchen. Glass patio doors over two metres high offer great views and fold back for access to a wide terrace that' perfect for breakfast. Below the common areas, accessed by two staircases, are generous twin and king bedrooms each with ensuite bathrooms with separate baths and showers. An informal open sitting area with hyacinth weave chairs sits between the bedrooms and spills out to the poolside terrace where there is a more informal dining set up – great for a poolside barbecue. Here is the only TV in the villa (32-inch flat screen) with DVD player, a small selection of DVDs and Satellite TV.

The annex building houses the two master bedrooms, one on each floor, joined to the main house by a walkway. The bedrooms have commanding views of this section of Bali’s east coastline with the ground floor opening out onto the pool and gardens whilst the first floor enjoys a spacious terrace. Hotel standard marble bathrooms with separate shower stalls, walk in dressing areas and a pleasant inside sitting room complete each bedroom. All the bedrooms are fully air conditioned.
