Villa Kawan (formerly Asmara No. 2)
Of course, you don’t have to be a surfer to stay at Villa Kawan (formerly Villa Asmara No. 2). This holiday home would work equally well if you happen to be a writer in need of inspiration, peace and solitude in beautiful natural surroundings, while developing the plot for your next bestseller.
Lost in time, someplace west of the wave-lashed sea temple of Tanah Lot, the tiny hamlet of Batu Tampih Kawan remains untouched by tourism. A narrow lane winds through the rice fields, and you might just have to give way to a paddle of ducks before reaching the remote Villa Kawan. If you’re looking for seclusion, local culture, and stunning views, combined with surfing, cycling or trekking activities, you will love this country getaway. Situated 500m from a rugged beach, and nearly three kilometres from the nearest main road, the property is in the middle of nowhere, with just one neighbour and literally nothing else around but fields and coconut palms. This is Bali as it used to be, all you will hear is the distant chatter of farmers and their children, the songs of the birds, and the sound of the ocean waves carried on the breeze.
Priced considerably lower than you would expect for a three-bedroom holiday rental villa of this standard, Kawan is ideal for surfers or outdoor-loving families, while also being immensely affordable for couples seeking a rural hideaway where they can truly be alone. The villa is the perfect base to explore the local villages and temples, take long walks down the beach and totally forget about your hectic lifestyle back home. The service of a car and driver is available on guest account.
Essentially self-catering, but looked after by friendly staff, including a very competent husband and wife team who will cook if required and do your grocery shopping (on guest account), this is indeed the kind of retreat where surfers get the best breaks and novels don’t just get read, they get written.

Villa Kawan is a simple, contemporary-styled, two-storey house in the middle of the rice fields with spectacular views south west towards the ocean and, on a clear day, to the mountains in the north east. If it wasn’t for an identical house next door, the property would be completely isolated.
The villa is entered via a spacious, high-ceilinged living and dining room, with an integrated kitchen equipped with a gas hob, a microwave, coffee maker, blender and other appliances. The living area is furnished with deeply cushioned sofas and chairs and the dining section with a table for eight. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor, while the upper floor presents a third bedroom as well as a timber-floored mezzanine with a dedicated massage corner complete with a massage table. The mezzanine is also home to another sitting area equipped with a small TV and DVD player, and a desk with a computer for guest use. A breezy, open-sided lounge sits on the stone rooftop deck, sheltered by its own pitched roof and furnished with an antique colonial-styled daybed and chairs, and a small table. This is a great spot to relax, especially at sunset, and take in the awesome vista of the rice fields, the mountains and the sea.
Each bedroom has a cool terracotta-tiled floor and is furnished with night tables and lamps. Each is complemented by an ample dressing room and an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in rain shower. The master bedroom has a queen-sized bed and glass doors on two sides, which open to the garden and pool, and its bathroom features a reproduction, high-backed, claw-footed bathtub with a handheld shower in addition to a standing shower. The second downstairs bedroom has a four-poster king-sized bed with French doors opening to the back garden while the upstairs bedroom has a double bed and private balcony.
The well-kept, walled garden features a flat lawn, and a ten-metre swimming pool with a timber deck on one side and a balé relaxation pavilion at one end, furnished with wooden chairs and a small table.
