Villa Atas Ombak

Positioned where it is, Villa Atas Ombak – meaning ‘Villa on Top of the Waves’ – is perfectly named. She has stood sentinel over this stretch of Bali’s south-western coastline since the mid-90s, combining tradition and 100-odd metres of beachfront, to create a sprawling estate of grandeur. Overflowing with charm, its architecture and decor understated and its huge garden strewn with frangipanis, fig trees and coconut palms, this is a property with plenty of elbow room. Indeed, it’s the largest private villa of its kind this close to Seminyak’s designer boutiques, restaurants and nightlife. Villa Atas Ombak was one of the pioneers of top-end destination villas in Bali and, despite the encroaching northwards sprawl, it remains as peaceful and undisturbed as when ground was first broken.

Characterised by high-pitched alang-alang thatched roofs, garden bathrooms and open living spaces with terrazzo floors, Atas Ombak presents separate pavilions in the classical Bali style. It sleeps ten and is a stellar place for nuptials or large gatherings, with ample play areas for a classroom-worth of kids, and multiple chill-out spots for the adults. They certainly don’t build them like this anymore. Well, where would anyone find the space for a start? Atas Ombak is loud, but the only sounds are of the wind and the waves, which give zero cause for complaint: it is always breezy and it is always cool. In fact, being in this wondrous setting, stroked by the warm westerly trade winds that carry the mysteries of the Indies across the sea, will simply blow you away.

The coastline view is magnificent, with at least 120 degrees of the 180-degree view being taken up by the ocean. This leaves virtually nothing to interrupt the emptying of your mind, except of course the arrival time of your next cold beer as you lounge beside the 18m stone-lined pool, but even that is taken care of by the nothing-is-too-much-trouble staff, including a full-time chef and villa manager. They have had years to get it right. Groceries will be purchased on your behalf (on guest account), and a suggestion menu is provided to help you plan your meals.

Atas Ombak comprises a main two-storey building, a vast, thatched pavilion – perfect for entertaining, and a two-bedroom guest pavilion, set within 6000sqm of tree-studded beachfront gardens. Guests are greeted in a splendid entrance hall – open on two sides, and sparsely furnished with only a dining table for ten, in order to maintain its grandeur. A fan-cooled TV room is linked to the hall by sliding wooden doors, and furnished with a white leather sofa and an antique cabinet housing a large flat-screen TV, DVD player, and a collection of books. A covered walkway traverses an enchanting lily pond to a commercial kitchen abundant in stainless steel.

The open-sided entertainment pavilion rests between the main building and the pool. Capped with a soaring thatched roof supported by rotund white pillars, this classic building functions as a living room, furnished with oversized bamboo sofas piled high with blue and white cushions; additionally a colonial-style round marble table offers just the spot for breakfast.

There are five bedrooms at Atas Ombak, three in the main building (two of which, including the master, are on ground level) and two in the contemporary-styled timber and glass-walled guest pavilion, which is positioned well away from the main house facing the ocean. Equipped with both air-conditioning and ceiling fans, all of the bedrooms are furnished with either queen-size or king-size beds (one of which converts to twins). Each has an integrated dressing area and glass doors that open to a sheltered balcony or terrace, affording gorgeous views.

The ensuite bathrooms in the main building have sculptured terrazzo washbasins and walk-in showers, with the two on the ground floor extending into open courtyards where guests’ privacy is protected by creeper-clad walls and mature trees. The master bathroom features a sunken bathtub, and the master bedroom is equipped with a TV. Both of the chic indoor-outdoor bathrooms in the guest pavilion are decorated with mosaic tiles and fitted with black polished-concrete soaking tubs and vanity units; their rain showers open to the sky.

The oceanfront pool is ideal for swimming laps, while also providing a shallow section for lazing; it is flanked by sunbeds, umbrellas, and a relaxation balé with a raised cushioned platform.
