Villa Avalon is a beautifully designed estate filled with the kind of overflowing gardens that the Viceroy of India himself would not have found out of place at his mansion in Delhi. When the new owner took over the villa, there was a gamut of greenery but no colour. So, quick as you like, he was in there with the heliconia and the parrot beaks, the frangipanis and the fruit trees, the lotuses and the lilies, adding all manner of chromatic playfulness to his surroundings.

Set well away from the main road, peace, quiet and privacy is a given. Guests will be lulled by a background of ocean waves and the cooing of turtle doves in the mango trees. To find such a magnificent five-bedroom villa this close to the beach (only 100m), this near to the trendy bars, boutiques and restaurants of Seminyak, and in this price range, is a rarity indeed; and to find one that also sits on almost one-third of a hectare of land is virtually unheard of. This stunning property comprises a three-bedroom villa with 16m pool, and a self-contained two-bedroom guesthouse with private entrance, kitchenette and 7m pool. An avenue of frangipanis marks the entrance to Villa Avalon, which is actually comprised of two villas with separate entrances on opposite sides of the driveway.

Entered on the upper floor, via a large, fan-cooled living room, which is perfect for receptions and parties, the main three-bedroom villa comprises two double-storey buildings. Below the living area, the dining room, furnished with a table for 14, sits beside the pool deck offering guests the choice of breezy tropical living or air-conditioned comfort; it is linked to the fully equipped kitchen pavilion by a wooden bridge over a fishpond. Folding doors from the dining room lead into the air-conditioned home theatre, equipped with a 53-inch flat screen TV, Blu Ray disc player, books and movies, and furnished with plush, deep, sink-into sofas.

The soft lawns embrace a 16m swimming pool, which is bordered by a shaded sundeck and presided over by an antique pendopo pavilion, with a terracotta tiled floor and a hand-carved tiered ceiling and columns. Complete with chairs, a table and a bar, this charming garden room just begs an afternoon curled up with a good book.

The air-conditioned master suite is situated on the ground floor of the second pavilion, flanked by a terrace and adjoined by a sitting room with a sofa that can be converted into twin beds – perfect for families. Furnished with a wrought iron king-size four-poster bed, it also has a dedicated dressing area, and a lavish, ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower and freestanding tub. Two more air-conditioned bedrooms are positioned one above the other; one with a terrace, the other with a delightfully spacious private balcony. One is furnished with a queen-size bed and the other a double four-poster; both ensuite bathrooms are fitted with rain showers and one also has a bathtub.

The self contained, two-bedroom guesthouse rests within its own private walled garden, complete with seven-metre pool, and an open-sided living and dining joglo pavilion with kitchenette. The two air-conditioned bedrooms (one double, the other queen-bedded) are situated in a separate pavilion and are furnished in colonial-style, while the ensuite bathrooms are fitted with walk-in rain showers.

All five bedrooms at Villa Avalon are equipped with a flat-screen TVs and Blu Ray disc players.
