Villa Bahagia

  • Location: Umalas-Kerobokan
  • Number of bedrooms: 4
Bahagia is the Indonesian word for happy; a state of mind embraced by the gracious Balinese and transmitted to guests as they disembark on this island of smiles. The staff at Villa Bahagia are no exception; you’re greeted with a frangipani necklace, a welcome juice and a smile.

Indeed it’s difficult to imagine why anyone wouldn’t be happy holidaying here as Villa Bahagia is a great example of contemporary Balinese indoor/outdoor living. The villa is spacious and comfortable with enough lounging areas to accommodate everyone even when fully occupied. There’s plenty of room for children to play on the large lawn – which is also useful as a setting for parties. The kitchen is well equipped for small events; speakers in the living area project a good sound and either the large balé (gazebo) adjacent to the main building or the smaller balé looking back at the villa from the bottom of the garden can double as a make-shift chapel for weddings.

Villa Bahagia is tastefully furnished in a mix of modern and antique Indonesian pieces. Calm white walls and floors are accented with contemporary pieces of art by local painters, black and white images of the island and antique wood-carved lamps and sculptures. From open-fronted, airy lounge and dining areas you can look out at the lush tropical garden across a 14m lap pool, whilst the four elegant, wood-floored bedrooms can be enjoyed in air conditioned comfort. The garden is surrounded by a high wall to ensure total privacy and is romantically flood-lit at night.

Four villa attendants happily go about their chores, they are discreet yet on hand to serve beverages by the pool and make delicious meals from a suggestion menu when required (provisions on guest account at cost, plus 20% service charge). An extra single bedroom, which would be suitable for a nanny or a child, connects to one of the twin-bedded rooms, so parents can go out on the town in neighbouring Seminyak knowing the kids are safe – happy days ahead.

White Palimanan stone flooring throughout the expansive L-shaped living and dining areas, coupled with white washed walls, antique doors and contemporary art work, create a tranquil almost gallery like ambience. Adjacent to the dining area is a large balé housing two brightly cushioned, built in couches and a wooden coffee table. Back inside, an upholstered teak bench faces a large flat-screen TV with home entertainment system while an imposing solid teak dining table, with matching sideboard built into a niche, sits ten on comfy rattan dining chairs. From the dining area two solid doors lead into a good-sized kitchen with floor-to-ceiling dark wood units and black granite work surfaces. In the high-roofed living area a grey/blue upholstered rattan lounge suite stands on an inlaid wooden floor around a teak coffee table, all with views over the garden.

The four main bedrooms also have attractive wood floors. Two of these rooms are on the ground floor and two are directly above on the first floor. One of the ground floor rooms opens onto the garden through sliding glass doors, while the first floor bedroom above it enjoys garden views from a small balcony. In each of the four rooms, solid teak, four-posters (two queen-size and two twins – convertible to kings) are accented with white mosquito nets. The upstairs twin is adjoined by a single-bedded room (suitable for a nanny or child) complete with a small TV and DVD player and connecting to a large balcony. A mix of built-in and walk-through wardrobes in the bedrooms all have safety deposit boxes. Downstairs the ensuites are open-air with standing showers, good sized bathtubs and double vanities, whilst the upstairs ensuites boast the same facilities but with views out over the neighbouring fields. All the bathrooms are well designed with palimanan stone floors and grey terrazzo walls.

A petite shingle-roofed balé sits at the bottom of the garden. The daybed inside provides a comfy retreat to snuggle up and read a good book.
