Villa Bali Bali Cottage

  • Location: Umalas-Kerobokan
  • Number of bedrooms: 3
Bali Bali Cottage is nestled into the beautifully manicured landscaped garden of the unique Bali Bali Estate in sleepy Umalas. Keeping very much to itself, this petite property shares the similarly striking shingle roofs of its two sister properties but is more familiarly formed, as its name suggests. Instead of sloping steeply down to almost ground level the Cottage roofs rise in pyramidical peaks which overlap with each other to form unusually shaped rooms and space-enhancing walkways that are refreshingly open-sided to allow cooling breezes to circulate. Liberal use of timber and island stone provides the property with bags of character and enhances its sustainable, tropical, contemporary design.

Perhaps offering the most privacy of the three Bali Bali Villas, intimate Bali Bali Cottage features an open-air whirlpool set in the heart of the house. Sitting alongside a teakwood walkway, this whirlpool languishes under the open sky beside a stone terrace topped with sun loungers and an enclosed tropical garden highlighted by palms, clipped lawns and manicured hedges. Close to the open-sided dining room, the whirlpool is sociably sited and enjoyable at any time of the day; it’s particularly invigorating at night when only stars illuminate the velvet-cloaked expanse of darkening sky above.

The interiors of the villa are earthy toned and highlighted by tribal artefacts sourced from all over the Indonesian archipelago. Different textures, shapes, sizes and colours of stone on the walls and floor are complemented by warm wooden tones that cosily characterise bedrooms and living areas. Featuring a spacious twin bedroom, a double bedroom above the living room and a small single (child's) room, this fully-staffed cottage is ideal for a couple or small family and, if booked in conjunction with the other two Bali Bali Villas, for a large grouping of friends. The properties are looked after by an efficient staff team who cater to guests requirements (grocery system on guests’ account) from each villa’s self-contained kitchen.

Stepping stones across the soft grass of the lawn lead into the open-plan living room of Bali Bali Cottage in the front building of two that make up this property. Having sofa seating to one side overlooking the palm-filled private front garden, the living room is also furnished with a corner cupboard with TV, DVD player and a stereo system.

Leading off from the living room is a fully equipped kitchen to the left and a small single bedroom to the right (best suited to a child) with access onto a lawned garden. The bathroom to the rear of the living room features twin marble sinks and an open-air shower, and is shared by the single bedroom and the cosy double upstairs. Reached via a hidden timber staircase that winds up to the first floor, the double bedroom features a steeply sloping roof and cupboards built into the timber walls.

As you walk further into the house from the living room you come to the open-sided dining room with table for six that forms the beginning of a covered timber walkway joining the two buildings and passing the stone sun deck and whirlpool. At the far end of the walkway is the main bedroom; a spacious timber-walled twin with its own ensuite bathroom with shower.
