Villa Bangkuang

Coconut trees and wide, quiet, open spaces will feature large in your daily life at Villa Bangkuang, with scores of the towering palms inhabiting both the gardens and the surrounding landscape of rice fields and big blue skies.

Villa Bangkuang is a charming, relaxing dwelling designed to introduce guests to the rural lifestyle of Bali. Blessed with an abundance of mango trees, coconut palms, tropical flora and immaculate lawns, this is a place without boundaries: even the adjoining property is hidden only by a border of palms and grassy knolls instead of the usual high walls. The villa faces out onto a huge flat expanse of rice fields that extend several hundred metres to the beach. Both foreign residents and villagers live in harmony in Sogsogan and neighbouring Seseh with a trust and respect which explains the lack of the fortress mentality that defines the more populated tourist locales.

The four-bedroom, contemporary-Balinese-styled property is comprised of a main two-storey building, an open-sided living and dining pavilion, and a single-storey guest pavilion. Walk through the large open garden, past the dazzling elevated 17m swimming pool, and you will reach a small stream with a footbridge leading to the aforementioned guest pavilion, which offers a very private retreat beside the rice fields. There are numerous places to hang out, including a towering balé bengong, literally ‘a place to dream’, meditate and contemplate, accompanied by a background of birdsong while soaking up the awesome vista.

Bangkuang is ideally suited for families and groups of friends who enjoy the great outdoors and relish the idea of mixing with the local people, absorbing the village ambience and learning a little bit more about the colourful Balinese Hindu culture. There is a sweet team of open-hearted staff here, they love kids and are keen to please with home-cooked local specialties and simple international fare. There is a suggestion menu and they will do the grocery shopping (all on guest account).

So much openness has generated an air of pure sincerity at Villa Bangkuang, nothing is masked; the only secret is in the destination.

Villa Bangkuang’s social hub is an open-sided, fan-cooled living and dining pavilion. Flanked by a pond and overlooking the garden and swimming pool, it contains a sitting area and a dining table to seat ten. To one side, below the master suite, is an open bar, next to which is a homely kitchen with glassless windows, fully equipped with oven, gas burners, appliances and quality tableware.

The master suite covers the whole of the upper floor of the two-storey building, with a wrap-around balcony and a beautiful view of the rice fields, forest and distant sea. Characterised by a polished parquet floor and a soaring roof, this romantic air-conditioned bedroom is furnished with a queen-size, four-poster bed. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows slide open on three sides, presenting guests with the option of a semi-alfresco sleeping experience, cooled by a ceiling fan. The room is equipped with a satellite-channel TV/DVD and has a walk-in dressing room, while its ensuite bathroom boasts picture windows and a small balcony from where you can almost touch the trees. Crafted in orange terrazzo, the bathroom is fitted with a monsoon shower and sunken tub for two beside a wall of glass, which will make you feel like you’re bathing in the heart of the jungle. Downstairs another large, air-conditioned bedroom presents a double bed and a sitting area with TV/DVD. This doubles as a play area for kids, with plenty of toys. Glass doors open to a pebbled garden bathroom fitted with a monsoon shower and bordered by tall trees and walls. The guest pavilion on the far side of the garden rests beside the rice fields and is very private. It houses two air-conditioned bedrooms that share a verandah. Here, queen size beds and window-seats await guests in chalet-like rooms with teak panelled walls. Fly screens ensure bug-free nights, and the ensuite bathrooms feature monsoon showers (one bathroom has a tub) open to the sky.

The coconut grove garden has a 17 x 4m elevated infinity pool as its central feature, complemented by sunloungers on the stone deck. A thatched double-storey balé bengong presents a cushioned relaxation area on the upper deck, offering sweeping rural views. In another corner of the garden a traditional jineng rice barn offers the perfect spot for a massage.
