Rumah Baraka

  • Location: Canggu
  • Number of bedrooms: 4
Push open Rumah Baraka’s huge wooden entrance gate and you immediately enter your very own, private sun-filled haven.

Baraka epitomizes a new generation of Bali residences: contemporary, sleek and minimalist in design; white-themed and sparkling clean. Simply comprising a spacious two-storey pavilion housing four ensuite bedrooms – including a jaw-dropping master suite – a living–dining pavilion and a relaxation balé (gazebo), accommodation is snugly arranged around a smart 3 x 12m lap pool. Reflecting the vast azure sky overhead, the pool becomes the focal point of a stay at Baraka, whether you are sun worshipping, making the most of the complimentary WiFi, or sipping sunset cocktails on the daybed.

Interiors feature terrazzo stone walls, floors and bathroom fixtures in natural hues; floor-to-ceiling windows and glazed sliding doors, plus quality teak wood furnishings. Funky touches include dining chairs upholstered in cow-hide and glass-shelved walk-in wardrobes. Breezes gently cool in the open-sided living–dining area, while glass-encased bedrooms maximise Bali’s tropical sunshine – all accentuating a fluid, tropical feel.

Subtle Mediterranean accents reflect the influence of Baraka’s Spanish owners, but on this ‘Island of the Gods’ respectful nods to the villa’s Indonesian origins and culture are never far away. Selected Asian artefacts are tastefully displayed throughout; a small water feature filled with playful carp lies between the kitchen and dining area, and the master bedroom roof terrace reveals a small Hindu shrine.

And Balinese hospitality is at work here too: an experienced chef and two housekeepers are unfailingly polite and work flexible hours to suit your needs. There’s also a villa manager on-hand who speaks good English. First-time dinner and breakfast is complimentary, after this, meals can be selected from a suggestion menu featuring Indonesian and western cuisine (provisions are at cost price with small service charge).

Venturing out, Rumah Baraka is conveniently situated just a few steps from a surfing beach and transport can easily be arranged (extra cost) to access the many and varied attractions that this increasingly popular part of Bali has to offer.

Rumah Baraka’s living, dining and kitchen area rests within an open-plan and open-sided pavilion at one end of the 3 x 12m lap pool. Natural breezes and ceiling fans keep the pavilion cool. Built into the sleek, terrazzo stone structure of the living area, two expansive, cushion-stacked daybeds sit adjacent, providing a lovely spot for evening get-togethers. Behind, on a raised level, the dining area is dominated by a beautifully crafted solid teak table seating eight and illuminated by an overhead chandelier made from hundreds of capiz shells. An intimate teak counter with two stools offers a more casual dining option. Compact yet well-equipped, the kitchen features a terrazzo stone work station, complete with pair of funky teak pod chairs.

At the opposite end of the pool is the balé, its cushioned comfort perfect for chilling. Weathered wood decking, upon which rattan-woven loungers are positioned for sun and relaxation, spans the length of the pool.

Flanking the pool deck a double-storey pavilion houses four ensuite bedrooms. On the ground floor, expansive sliding glass doors lead into bedrooms one, two and three. Minimalist and bright, bedroom interiors feature off-white terrazzo stone floors, while soft furnishings in beige and brown complete the airy, neutral tone. Air-conditioning and ceiling fans keep temperatures cool. All four rooms feature beds raised on stone plinths and encircled by cotton mosquito nets, plus glass-shelved wardrobes and daybeds. Bedroom three, smaller than the others, provides a queen-size bed, whilst king-size beds occupy the remaining rooms. The sleek bathrooms are particularly noteworthy, incorporating walk-in tropical rain showers and lengthy trough-style, terrazzo stone sinks; bedroom two additionally boasts a bedside sunken stone bath, plus open-air garden bathroom with two rain showers facing each other.

Occupying the entire upper floor, the master bedroom is nothing short of palatial, providing rice-field views on one side and, through sliding glass doors on the other, birds-eye pool views. This spectacular suite comes complete with sitting room section featuring a massive L-shaped daybed opposite the 42-inch TV and DVD/ CD player, two spacious glass-encased bathrooms and a sculptured stone double bath beside the bed. Outside, a broad balcony complete with two large white sofas and table provides additional living space.
