Laksmana Estate - Villa Batavia

When the Dutch colonised the region through the Dutch East Indies Trading Company, Batavia was the original name given (and kept up until 1945) for the city now known as Jakarta. Villa Batavia has a classic colonial feel reminiscent of that era - black and white marble corridors under towering colonnades, cast iron balustrades with teak banisters, tall shuttered windows and doors with delightfully bevelled glass; giant four poster beds, art deco style stain glass, free standing copper panelled baths (master bedrooms only), brass fans and lights modelled on old leaded gas lamps from a bygone age. There is even a Byzantine style mosaic steam/spa room. In addition, 8 staff provide some good old fashioned service in crisp white uniforms with gold trim livery. Butlers are available around the clock, 2 chefs conjure up food from an ever so modern kitchen complete with stocked wine fridges, and a dedicated villa manager is available to ensure everything runs smoothly. The chefs are unlikely to let you in the kitchen and will also monopolise the shopping (on the guest account plus a fee) but guests can choose whatever they may wish to eat and there is a suggestions menu to assist.

Villa Batavia was launched in 2008, so not everything is olde worlde. Between the 18th century engravings in each of the 4 bedrooms are flat screen HD TVs complete with cable TV and DVD players, and an IPod player (bring your own IPod). A Sonos sound system with Bose speakers is through out the common areas, as is WiFi, and an Apple Mac sits at the bar. All the bedrooms are fully air-conditioned and come with distinctly modern ensuite bathrooms complete with raindrop showers and toiletries. The formal lounge and dining room is also air-conditioned whilst the bar, bedroom terraces and downstairs reception are open sided to let in the sea breezes. Ground floor rooms spill out onto a freeform swimming pool and small sun garden whilst upstairs terraces and the bar have commanding views of the surrounding rooftops of thriving Seminyak.

Villa Batavia is spread over two double-storey buildings which wrap around a freeform swimming pool and pretty garden. The common areas in the ā€œL’ shaped main building are reached via tall, marble-floored corridors lined with columns. Downstairs right opposite the towering teak front doors is the open sided reception room which overlooks the swimming pool. Immediately above, a casual teak lined bar, again open sided, with vaulted ceilings offers views over neighbouring roofs which can be shuttered out if desired. A top class stereo provides suitable music. The combined formal dinning and sitting room is adjacent. Here there is air-conditioned dining for 10 served from the modern kitchen next door. The sitting area comes with plasma TV and surround sound. On the ground floor beneath, two guest bedrooms spill out onto a poolside terrace complete with sun loungers.

The annex building houses the two master bedrooms, one on each floor, joined to the main house by a ground floor walkway. King size 4-poster beds, walk in wardrobes, HD TVs with DVDs, IPod players and raindrop showers are standard for all bedrooms. In addition, the master bedrooms each have freestanding copper baths. Downstairs opens out onto the gardens and terrace whilst upstairs enjoys a wide terrace with solid teak table and plantation chairs – perfect for afternoon tea. The upstairs master bedroom also includes a single bed in a small study area. Round the back of the annex building is a mini spa with massage table and connecting steam room.
