The Beach House

The Beach House in Seenimodera was formerly owned by the late Douglas Johnson, a prominent artist. He bought the plot with existing house back in the early 1990’s and enjoyed the tranquillity, seclusion and beauty of this location so much so that he spent every winter painting here. Johnson also improved the house and grounds, adding the ‘Yellow Studio’ near to the vehicle entrance gate and the ‘Blue House’ to one corner of the garden, along with the help of his very good friend, the late Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. Even though this property has been further modernised with the addition of spacious outdoor bathrooms, a wonderful emerald green swimming pool and cosy interior furnishings, its artistic presence still remains.

With the melody of the ocean in your ears as you sleep, read, swim and dine, the property instils in you a sense of security and tranquillity. It is a homely retreat set beside a beautifully unspoilt stretch of beach populated only by crabs that skitter in and out of holes as the tide ebbs and flows, and the fishermen who haul their nets onto the soft golden sand shortly after sunrise. The house is simple but elegant, perfectly mirroring both its picturesque location and past; in tribute to its former owner it is filled with Johnson’s paintings, shell statues and picture frames, many of which were miraculously salvaged after the tsunami swept through the property five years ago.

A spacious garden featuring a large freeform swimming pool envelopes the house; heliconias and bright white frangipani flowers provide a touch of colour amid the verdant green whilst a little sand garden has been created near to the border with the beach. The house is filled with a variety of books affording anyone the opportunity to browse whilst sun beds on the lawn entice those wishing to top up their tan. The gentle staff of five expertly and discreetly tends to your every need including cooking and provisioning (food costs on guest account). This is an ideal property for anyone searching for reclusive relaxation, for family gatherings, and for artists and writers seeking inspiration and tranquillity to carry out their work.

Enter the property through a small back gate that leads under some trees to the verandah of the house. As you pass into the Living Room, you reach a large cosy space featuring plush sofa seating, antique cabinets full of books, unique works of art including a large painting by Douglas Johnson set in a shell-encrusted frame and views out to sea. The three bedrooms in the house as well as the kitchen all open onto this spacious and airy room, whose high ceiling features rafters and a collection of stag’s heads protruding from the higher sections of the walls. There are two wide doors from the living room to the verandah, one to the front where comfy seating invites you to relax and soak in the sea views, and another to the side for dining.

The main bedroom in the house, and the one in which Johnson himself used to stay, is located to the front, overlooking the ocean and garden if not for a large green plant planted for privacy from the pathway leading to the pool, which the second window overlooks. This room has a double four poster bed, an antique cupboard and writing desk in front of the window. To the rear is a walk-through vanity area that leads to a large walled outdoor bathroom with stone flooring, rain shower and free-standing tub. The other two bedrooms in the house, a further double and a twin, are similarly furnished with indoor en-suite bathrooms, eye-catching shell encrusted ornaments and views onto the back garden.

The equipped kitchen is also located off the living room and opens onto the rear of the dining verandah that is mainly the domain of the staff whose rooms lie just beyond. A small stone walkway through the garden leads to the ‘Blue Room’ (double bed), a free standing pavilion with en-suite outdoor bathroom and front verandah overlooking the garden and sea. Another free-standing pavilion, the ‘Yellow Studio’ (double and ensuite) is located near to the vehicle entrance gate and beyond the pool, which it overlooks. Both are rustic and similarly furnished with antique furniture and Johnson’s unique shell artwork.
