Bendega Villas
Bendega Villas occupies almost 4000sqm of land which would ordinarily be enough to build two good sized villas, but its New Zealand owners opted for open space over extra bedrooms. The result is a very generously proportioned four-bedroom villa, arranged in pleasing symmetry across tropical landscaped gardens, koi-filled ponds, and an 11m square swimming pool with stunning sunset views. Private bedroom terraces, a shady reading pavilion, hidden sundeck, inviting sun loungers and a huge poolside balé for relaxing, socialising and dining all await your holiday pleasure.
Space isn’t the only thing uncompromised at Bendega Villas: finishings and furnishings throughout are of top quality – from the earthy hues of the Indian sandstone terraces and walls, and the soothing polished travertine in the bathrooms through to the quality bed linen. The state-of-the-art Sonos sound system has individual zones, strategically arranged to play music indoors and out. Bright, bold Sunbrella fabrics adorn the two oversized sofas in the double-height, semi-open-air living room where ten antique carved panels hang on the wall above an old wooden canoe which has been topped with glass and ingeniously transformed into the perfect buffet table. Indeed, every room at Bendega Villas showcases tasteful art and antiques selected by the owners to reflect the rich culture of Indonesia. For more earthly pursuits, the TV and games rooms provide air conditioned comfort from which to enjoy a movie on the 50-inch plasma-screen, read a book from the extensive library, play a board game or challenge your fellow guests to a game of pool. A small, but well-equipped gym and a professional massage table (massage and spa treatments outsourced at extra cost) will ensure that health and beauty needs are taken care of.
A friendly but professional team of staff, including a helpful manager, is on hand 24/7 to look after you. The chef creates a wide range of the most mouth-watering Asian and Western dishes; even producing homemade jams and chutneys! Breakfast is included but other provisions are on guest account. A complimentary car and driver are available up to 10 hours a day (petrol extra), but you may be reluctant to tear yourself away from the luxury and serenity of Bendega Villas to benefit from this particular perk!

A solid wood gate slides open to reveal a 2m-high black stone Buddha head serenely welcoming you to Bendega Villas. On the far side of a large cobbled and grassed courtyard stepping stones guide you over soothing, fish-filled water into the villa itself. Symmetrically designed in a broad H-shape, with the main living areas and three of the four double bedrooms housed in the two-storey horizontal bar of the H, and the fourth bedroom, pool pavilion, staff quarters and gym forming its four vertical prongs, Bendega Villas sits among frangipani, jasmine, palms and tropical fruit trees. Next to the pool pavilion (furnished with a huge L-shaped daybed, a round dining table and chairs, water-resistant bean bags and a recessed kitchenette, the stone-lined pool features a wide, shallow shelf – perfect for sipping evening cocktails at sunset.
Across the lawn, the bright air conditioned dining room is dominated by a solid marbau-wood table (seating up to 20). A door to the back of the dining room leads to the modern kitchen superbly equipped with Jura Impressa coffee machine, two fridges, extra large oven, even waffle and ice cream makers. A chef’s dream!
At the opposite end of the living pavilion the TV and games rooms offer air conditioned comfort on soft sofas, or bar-style seating around the full-size pool table. DVDs, books, games, or music from the Sonos sound system (controlled remotely from anywhere within the villa) provide entertainment. There are two further TVs in the twin-room and the gym.
Between the dining room and TV room is the semi-open, double-height living area. Here, comfortable black sofas offset with bold fabrics, form a dramatic contrast against the pale sandstone floor. A staircase at the back of the living area leads up to a mezzanine corridor, off which are three of the four bedrooms (two kings and a twin). All bedrooms are spacious, air conditioned, tastefully furnished with Asian pieces, colourful ikat (traditionally woven) textiles and have French doors leading to breezy balconies. Three of the bedrooms feature super-comfortable, four-poster, king-size beds; the fourth has generous twin beds (which can be joined to make a king). A stand-alone pavilion houses the fourth king-bedded room, which has a particularly peaceful outlook across the terraced rice fields. With the exception of the twin room (whose ensuite is shower only) the bathrooms feature large sunken ceramic bathtubs, travertine vanities with double washbasins, sandstone floors, and very spacious rain showers. In the open-air, walled bathroom behind the gym is a massive bathtub carved from a single piece of black river-rock – for a rewarding soak after a good workout!
