Villa Biru Biru

Size isn’t everything, so they say, it’s what you do with the resources available to you that counts and Villa Biru-Biru Bali is a living testament to that sentiment. This villa is a perfect example of how talented people can work wonders with some simple ideas and a lick of paint: the kind of thing you see on celebrity house renovation shows that transform the “so-so” into the “so, yes!”

Compact and small but perfectly formed, the two-bedroom Villa Biru-Biru Bali, named ‘blue-blue’ after the sky and the pool, is built around two sides of a swimming pool within a walled courtyard. But what was once a very ordinary, simple little house has been made over by the owners into an eclectic, chic and very comfortable holiday home in the heart of hip and happening Seminyak. By moving two of the three bathrooms outside into the usual ‘dead zone’ between the house and boundary walls to create romantic bathrooms capped with semi-open pergola roofs, these interior design wizards have utilised every inch of space and allowed the bedroom sizes to be maximised. Another masterpiece is the fishpond that runs three-quarters of the way along the back wall, harmonised with raised stepping stones, birds nest ferns, intricately-carved statues and soothing water spouts. In the bedrooms and living spaces, meanwhile, guests will be dazzled by a palate of white walls and white fabrics, lime-washed louvre doors and furnishings, complemented by an eclectic collection of mirrors, artwork, the occasional antique and some very cool, local artefacts.

This being Seminyak, where every man and his dog wants to be based, Biru-Biru Bali offers great value for money in the middle of the action. It is ideally suited for one or two couples. Managed by a sweet part-time housekeeper, who will prepare daily continental breakfast (inclusive for up to four people), the villa is available on a self-catering basis – but with the option to hire-in an experienced chef to prepare gourmet meals for you at a reasonable extra cost, or to dine out at Bali’s very best international restaurants, which are literally on the doorstep.

A traditional Balinese gate and a pair of welcome statues mark the entrance to the villa, opening directly to the 5.8m swimming pool, which is bordered on two sides by the single-storey L-shaped house and a timber deck.

There are two main bedrooms at Biru-Biru Bali, positioned on either side of the living room. Each is accessed via louvre shuttered doors from the poolside terrace, and each is a romantic dream, with white netted king-sized bed, white tented wardrobes and fresh white décor. The living/study room can be changed to fit another King or 2 Single beds. More louvre doors lead into the ensuite bathrooms, each featuring a non-slip tiled floor within a courtyard planted with heliconias, adorned with hanging lamps and statues, and bordered by high walls for privacy under clear roofs that channel the sunshine and the moonshine. Each is fitted with a single washbasin and a standing rain shower.

The high-roofed, air-conditioned, sitting room/study presents two daybeds, a desk and chair, and a collection of artwork, and artefacts, lit by big hanging lanterns. Guests can watch DVDs via the villa’s iMac computer (with large screen). This room doubles as an extra bedroom with an ensuite indoor bathroom equipped with a standing rain shower with a tribal black and white painted backsplash.

At the end of the pool is the living and dining space, serviced by a simple kitchen linked by a counter. This broad semi-open-air room is furnished with a comfy upholstered sofa, two chairs and a coffee table on one side, and a dining table for six on the other, lit by a hanging lantern of jingling white capiz shells and cooled by a ceiling fan. The kitchen is well equipped with a large fridge, an oven and five-burner hob, and a comprehensive range of utensils, plates and glassware.

Finally, the pool deck is furnished with a bench seat on one side, while two sunbathing cushions sit upon a raised platform on the opposite side.
