Villa Bougainvillea
Each bedroom opens onto its own covered terrace with built-in, cushioned daybed big enough for two – the perfect spot for a restorative massage. The bathrooms too are generous with oversized terrazzo baths surrounded by picture windows looking onto walled gardens. The style, furniture and decoration of Bougainvillea is a mix of Dutch Colonial and traditional Indonesian. Solid teak daybeds and coffee tables, four-poster canopied beds, traditional wall hangings and local sculpture are effortlessly matched with brightly coloured soft cushions. The overall effect is comfortably welcoming and casual.
Many of the staff have been with the villa for some time so know the ropes very well and provide friendly efficient service. The villa chef can shop for and prepare a wide variety of dishes from across the globe and is used to catering for special requests and diets: from children’s meals to vegetarian, traditional Balinese to barbecue’s, he’s up to the challenge. Whilst the villa management company do provide airport transfers the villa does not come with a full-time driver and car; however, both can be arranged at an extra charge if required.
Although this tropical retreat feels very secluded and hidden, in reality it is only a few short kilometres to Berawa and Pererenan surf beaches – both of which have a number of good scenic eateries. What’s more, within fifteen minutes you can be either in the heart of Bali’s fashionable Seminyak or playing golf at the famous Nirwana Bali Golf Club.

The villa’s architecture and finishes, like most great designs, are based on the clever use of a limited palette of materials – in this case wood-shingle roofs, local white Palimanan stone, hardwood and terrazzo floors. The effect is one of calm elegance, with colour being introduced largely by the vibrant tropical gardens as well as soft furnishings and wall hangings.
The main living pavilion forms the villa’s heart; open and airy with exposed timber-raftered roof supported on solid wood columns rising from a polished light terrazzo floor. The scale and setting, overlooking the pool and river below, give it a respectable sense of grandeur from which to enjoy meals at the solid wood dining table or relaxing on the oversized Javanese teak daybeds. The living pavilion also houses the kitchen and a guest toilet. To one side of the main building is a double-storey study cum television room which is equipped with a home theatre system, DVD player and internet connection. Folding teak doors allow the study to be either opened up for tropical alfresco living or closed for cool, air conditioned comfort. A staircase leads up from the study to a loft bedroom area with a double bed suitable for older children or a nanny. There’s also a shower and toilet off the study.
All three bedroom pavilions are of a very similar size and style, and while each is decorated in a different colour scheme and furnished with selected teak furniture and traditional woven wall-hangings which add individuality and charm, their only real difference lies in location: the first is at the top level of the property, slightly above the living pavilion, with a terrace overlooking a small pond. The second is one level below the living pavilion and has a view over the pool and gardens, whilst the third is at pool level with a terrace overlooking the river. The bedrooms are private and have large ensuite bathrooms with indoor terrazzo baths and outdoor rain showers. As a thoughtful addition for families with younger children, extra trundle beds are hidden below the four-poster queen beds and each also provides a television with CD and DVD player. These air conditioned bedrooms feature generous fan-cooled terraces furnished with cushioned daybeds.
