Mirissa Hills - The Bungalow

This charming ochre-coloured bungalow set amidst indigenous woodland has plenty of character and, despite renovations, still retains an evocative colonial atmosphere. With its three bedrooms, dining room and furnished foyer/sitting room, all within a pretty fretwork-adorned exterior, The Bungalow at Mirissa Hills exhibits a high roof, typical of other houses of its era, to keep the property well ventilated and its inhabitants cool. Surrounded by a grassy lawn, overlooking paddy fields and set on the very edge of an aromatic cinnamon plantation, the bungalow is absorbed in its surroundings and alive with the sound of birdsong, monkey chatter and cricket chirruping from dawn until dusk.

Inside the bungalow the decor is elegant, with a style that seamlessly blends the old with the new. Whilst antique furniture and artefacts hark back to the bungalow’s early days, new bathrooms, in keeping with the style of the house, cheerfully modernise the property to ensure comfort for its occupants. Stark white walls are highlighted by contemporary artworks, most of which have been sourced in Sri Lanka. This comfortable, sophisticated though not over-the-top accommodation is ideal for those seeking serenity close to, but not on, the beach. It would also make a perfect base for writers and artists who might like to hole themselves up for long periods of time.

The bungalow is fully staffed and comes with a chef and live-in houseboy who take care of you during your stay. Guests can choose to self-cater if they wish, however breakfast is included and the chef is excellent; his rice and curry should not be missed! The bungalow has been designed to afford peace and serenity to its guests so mod cons such as TVs, DVD players and internet connections will not be found here. For a little diversion, guests could learn about cinnamon cultivation and harvesting or head to Mirissa and Weligama bays (Mirissa Hills owns a stretch of beach, 15 minutes away) which both offer plenty to keep the visitor amused, from whale watching to sailing, surfing and diving.

Enter The Bungalow at Mirissa Hills through a furnished foyer where rattan planter’s chairs invite you to relax and unwind. Continue into the house and you will come to the dining room furnished with a long wooden dining table to seat up to eight guests. This room has an attractive tiled floor and is kept cool courtesy of its lofty ceiling and overhead fans.

To either side of the dining room is a twin bedroom. The first one, to the left of the entrance, overlooks the side garden through shuttered antique windows and features two single rattan beds with individual mosquito nets suspended above them, a couple of Dutch antique chests, a wide linen-topped desk and a wardrobe. The room is fan cooled and has an attached bathroom with stone-floored shower.

To the right-hand side of the entrance is a smaller twin that overlooks the garden on the other side of the house. Perhaps quieter than the rest, this bedroom features two single beds with mosquito nets suspended above each one and a fan to keep the occupants cool. The attached bathroom has a stone-floored shower.

Just off the far end of the dining room is a guest bathroom with cupboard storage space, whilst directly ahead is an archway that leads into a courtyard furnished with a breakfast table. Beyond the courtyard is the kitchen and back garden. To the left of the courtyard, overlooking the side garden, is a double bedroom with wardrobe, antique chest and linen-topped desk. The bedroom is fan cooled and has an attached bathroom with shower.
