Jimbaran Alamanda - Colonial Hut

Sometimes all you want out of life is a simple hut next to a honey-sand beach with a legendary Bali sunset to look at, a strawberry margarita in your hand and a ‘your-wish-is-my-command’ genie at your side. Surely that’s not too much to ask? Of course, if you’re setting your sights higher than a mere hut, you could try wishing for a generous one-bedroom villa with a mammoth living and dining pavilion, a kitchen and a 13m swimming pool. Wrap this in neo-colonial architecture blended with Dutch-style teakwood and rattan furnishings and a flower-filled garden; rebrand the genie as a butler and allow your wishes to be granted at the modestly-named ‘Colonial Hut’ at Jimbaran Alamanda Villa.

One of an enclave of three villas that can be rented independently or as a whole, the Colonial Hut is just a skip and a hop from the beach and is extraordinarily good value for money. After all, why opt for a hotel room when you can have a blissfully private villa like this – complete with breezy balconies, an expansive garden and your own pool – for the same price? This is a wonderfully romantic retreat for couples, and with an extra mezzanine room which could sleep one or two kids, it’s also suitable for a small family.

A holiday at the Colonial Hut is a harmonious tropical still-life of sunshine and the sound of the waves, combined with freshly-squeezed fruit juices, best-selling novels, laps of the pool, and delectable barbequed seafood from Jimbaran Bay. Not forgetting glorious sunsets over the ocean accompanied by pre-dinner cocktails.

Luxury living comes with a team of staff who share duties at all three of the Jimbaran Alamanda villas and who work on the principal: ‘your wish is my command’!. This team includes personal butlers, a terrific chef, and a driver and car (half day included in the rate). Instead of preparing meals from a menu, the staff will do the grocery shopping (on guest account plus a 20% service charge) and the chef will cook delicious meals and barbeques according to your whims.

The Colonial Hut presents a cavernous open-sided living and dining pavilion with a cream terrazzo floor under a vaulted alang-alang thatched roof that soars up to a height of about nine metres, supported by rounded stone pillars. The room is cooled by ceiling fans and furnished with a circular marble-topped dining table and four rattan chairs, an ‘opium’ coffee table, a colonial-styled chaise longue, a little leather chair, side tables and lamps. At one end is a louvred wooden wall, which can be flipped to keep the sun out or opened to let in more light and views of pool and garden. Wooden stairs on one side of this shuttered wall lead to a sheltered terrace overlooking the pool. This is furnished with a pair of rattan planter chairs and a small table, and offers a glimpse of the sea over the top of the garden wall.

Below is a 13m swimming pool with a timber deck, furnished with two sunloungers and a table with an umbrella. The walled garden is dotted with coconut trees, big pots of succulent crimson adenium, heliconias, and the namesake yellow alamanda, while the grassy lawn is big enough for kids to play football.

Leading off the living and dining area is a terrazzo-floored air-conditioned bedroom, with a king bed canopied in white netting. Teak furnishings include a wardrobe and a desk in one corner and the room is equipped with a satellite channel TV and DVD player. A wooden spiral staircase from this bedroom leads up to small air conditioned bedroom with a double bed, making this suite ideal for a couple with one or two kids. Glass doors open to a covered balcony overlooking the huge communal garden and furnished with a pair of colonial rocking chairs. There is just one ensuite bathroom (on the ground floor) fashioned in cream marble with an indoor bathtub and an open-air shower in a private pebbled courtyard. Also on the ground floor is a spacious kitchen equipped with fridge and four-burner hob.
