Jimbaran Alamanda - Colonial Suite

Three-and-a-half centuries of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia left some splendid influences on the country’s architecture, so if modern, flat-roofed design doesn’t float your boat, you might just be turned on by the relaxed romantic style of the colonial yesteryear.

Visualise a breezy colonnaded walkway draped in a brilliant explosion of pink bougainvillea, and then imagine sinking into a planter’s chair on a lazy veranda. Next, let your mind wander through rooms characterised by high ceilings, louvre shutters and antique floor tiles, before contemplating meals at a circular marble-topped table illuminated by a bell-jar lantern. Colonial style bespeaks rustic charm and oodles of space, so now picture a massive swimming pool, a hall-like living and dining room bathed in warm sunlight, and three expansive cream-walled bedrooms where pared-down decor invokes a sense of calm. All of this can be found at the Colonial Suite, one of a group of three villas collectively known as Jimbaran Alamanda.

Now don’t be deceived by the name; much more than a suite, this is an impressive two-storey house that was built not in the colonial heyday but in the early ’90s when beachside land was plentiful – hence the abundance of space. Did someone say beachside? Yes, the spectacular Jimbaran Bay is literally a stone’s throw away, while sea views and sunsets can be enjoyed from your balcony.

Despite its slightly-dated, faded-grandeur vibe, the Colonial Suite is not only about past glories; it combines the old style of the last century with the comforts and technology of the new. Throw in the wonderful anticipatory service of the personal butlers, and this is a perfect villa for families and groups of friends.

Luxury living at The Colonial Suite comes with a team of staff who share duties at all three of the Jimbaran Alamanda villas, including a terrific chef, and a driver and car (half day included in the rate). Instead of preparing meals from a menu, the staff will do the grocery shopping (on guest account plus a 20% service charge) and the chef will cook delicious meals and barbeques according to your whims.

Probably the most outstanding feature at The Colonial Suite is the swimming pool, measuring a gigantic 25 x 10m and dominating the garden with its broad stone deck. There’s majesty about it too – eight stone turtles sit around the sides, carrying pots of flowers on their backs while spouting water into the depths. A pergola burgeoning with bougainvillea also rests beside the pool, providing shade for three loungers, and a bale (gazebo) is situated at the far end in a shady place with a table and chairs.

The large, two-storey, thatched villa is fronted by an elevated terrace. Sheltered by a roof and supported by pillars, this extends to the pool deck and is furnished with planters’ chairs and wooden sofas. From here, a central stairway with wide steps sweeps past palimanan stone fretwork friezes to the upper floor, into a huge living and dining room featuring lovely old Javanese floor tiles under a high roof. This is real colonial style with a gerobok rice chest, a quirky wooden chandelier, a marble dining table with six chairs, and an open-plan kitchen tucked in one corner with marble worktops, a four-burner hob, microwave and fridge. There is also a sitting area with a small sofa and a 37-inch flat screen TV and DVD player, while glass doors on two sides open to a terracotta-tiled balcony with views of the sea from a pergola-shaded sitting and dining area, furnished with a table and four chairs.

There are three huge bedrooms at the Colonial Suite, one upstairs and two downstairs; each is furnished with a king bed (one of which converts to twins) and equipped with a satellite-channel TV. The master bedroom on the upper floor has a parquet floor and a sitting area with a desk, chairs and an antique circular table. It also boasts a walk-in wardrobe, and direct access to the wrap-around balcony. One of the downstairs bedrooms also has a sitting and dining area. All three bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with bathtubs and standing rainshowers, the two downstairs bathrooms are flanked by private walled courtyards, and one has a rainshower open to the sky.
