Baan Dalah

  • Location: Bang Rak-Big Buddha
  • Number of bedrooms: 3
From plane to beach allow about 30 mins – 20 minutes for immigration and baggage collection at Koh Samui’s charmingly colourful little international airport, 10 minutes transfer to the villa and just a few seconds to throw off your shoes and slip into something comfortable before diving into the 12 metre pool or stepping onto the pretty sandy beach and into the waters of Big Buddha Bay. Baan Dalah is the perfect beach house holiday home for the family. Simple and unpretentious but very liveable and comfortable. It is not difficult to relax here whether it is lying on the sun loungers by the pool or sinking into the easy chairs in the living room with the floor to ceiling doors folded back creating a pleasant indoor/outdoor feel or sitting on the beach in the shade of the small thatched parasol. The views are enticing with the islands of Koh Som and Koh Phan Ngan a pleasant backdrop to the calm and safe waters of the bay.

More Balinese than Thai in styling and décor, the 3 bedrooms (all ensuite) of Baan Dalah are simply but practically furnished. The combined dining, kitchen and living room with its wood panel trim and natural weave furnishings is open and bright. Full length patio doors open up onto a terrace and a small lawn which in turn spills out onto the beach and pool. The sea breezes together with rolling fans giving a lovely airy feel – very relaxing. A villa manager and cleaner come full time with the villa and a chef can be arranged to do all the cooking (costs extra) and provisioning so the whole family can have a holiday. Alternatively there is a selection of restaurants in Bangrak a short walk down the beach or at Fisherman’s Village, 5 minutes drive away, with its popular strip of beachside eateries. The much busier and larger Chaweng is only 6 km away.

Enter through the low Balinese style double doors into a compact courtyard garden stuffed with pungent flowering frangipani and attractive gingers. To the left is the living pavilion which combines a kitchen, dining area (seats 8) and lounge all decked out with wood panelling and featuring large patio doors. The open style but simple kitchen is well equipped coming with electric hobs (no oven), microwave and fridge freezer. Four stools pull up to the bench for casual eating. The lounge area has dark rattan sofa and chairs whilst outside on the terrace are 4 ever so comfortable hyacinth loungers. Across the courtyard are the 3 bedrooms. The master is beach side with 3 sets of patio doors that open seaward, behind are bedrooms 2 (double) and 3 (twin). Each bedroom is air conditioned, ensuite with shower rooms (the master also has a bathtub) and comes with satellite TV with shared feed and DVD players. Beachside, where the 12 metre pool runs parallel with the shore, there is a small sala (gazebo) and two shady thatched parasols on the sand.
