Laksmana Estate - Villa Des Indes I

Enter through a huge antique Chinese wooden door into the tranquil tropical gardens of Villa Des Indes I, shaded by mature frangipani, with an exquisitely hand-carved, century-old, Javanese Joglo as the focal point. The Joglo, a traditional timber house that was once the home of a nobleman, was rescued by the owners and incorporated within the villa’s open-sided living and dining pavilion (fan cooled; no air-conditioning), which appears to float upon the waters of the surrounding koi fish ponds and 21m free-form swimming pool. The villa is really a showroom for the owner’s eclectic accumulation of Indonesian artefacts and curios. Each of the three self-contained guest bungalows, similar to the Dutch guesthouses of the Javanese hill stations, is stuffed with collectables - from an old Chinese rocking chair to a fine antique silver tea set for high tea (served by one of the butlers of course); from original Dutch East Indies travel posters to a war-time transistor radio. Villa Des Indes I is perfect for those looking for a delightful combination of nostalgia and luxury akin to the famous hotel after which the villa is named.

Luxury comes in the form of your own personal chef and waiting staff who will cater to your personal needs whether a simple brunch in the poolside balé (gazebo), sunset cocktails and tapas in the Joglo's upper living room – a signature service of the villa – or a silver service formal dinner with antique cutlery and candelabras. Staff will also take care of the provisioning – so civilised. Alternatively you can leave the peace and privacy of Villa Des Indes I and experience the elegant restaurants and bars of stylish Seminyak just a few minutes stroll from the quiet cul-de-sac on which the villa is tucked.

The spacious living and dining pavilion at Villa Des Indes I presents open-air tropical living at its very best. Cooled by paddle fans, with a stone floor and roof that appears to extend upwards for ever, it has been furnished with comfortable rattan sofas, lazy chairs, oriental rugs and glass topped tables. Antique statues, Balinese Hindu woodcarvings and colourful pieces of artwork have been fondly placed in well-lit settings that show them off to their best advantage. An elevated area within the Joglo is furnished with a dining table and chairs.

The guest suites at Villa Des Indes I are housed within three, separate, self-contained, colonial-style bungalows, complete with ensuite bathrooms and wide verandas. Two of the bungalows are single storey with den-libraries attached to the bedrooms. The third bungalow boasts an upstairs open deck that serves as a delightful breezy living space ideal for sunset cocktails, facilitated by an adjacent butler's pantry. All of the bungalows are fully air-conditioned. They are furnished with four-poster beds and equipped with satellite channel TVs and DVD players. The adjoining indoor-outdoor bathrooms are equipped with large mirrors, reproduction marble washstands, pedestal washbasins, walk-in rain showers, and splendidly appointed bathtubs. The outdoor showers feature timber decking, while the flow of water emanates from the mouths of stone-carved griffins. Here, guests’ privacy is protected by high walls and moss-encrusted temple guardians.

The cosy den-libraries represent a bygone era, with timber clad walls and soaring roofs. Each has been lovingly furnished with lazy chairs, deeply cushioned sofas, brass lamps, desks, oriental rugs and bookcases full of glossy books on Bali, Indonesia, art, antiques, Indonesian history and more.

A fifth, free-standing pavilion houses a semi-open-air bar complete with eight bar stools, next to a wall of Balinese masks. Resting beside a large silver-doored, hi-tech fridge, is a cool collection of much earlier refrigerators – teak ice chests – in which food was once stored upon metal shelves with blocks of ice. Tucked away behind the bar, is a fully equipped service kitchen, a laundry room and the staff quarters, as well as a fully equipped office complete with a fax machine and a Broadband accessible high speed computer.
