Laksmana Estate - Villa Des Indes II
This enchanting and immaculate two-bedroom home, complete with lagoon-style swimming pool and enormous 900sqm garden, is a masterpiece of colonial-style design. The social hub of the villa is a beautiful century-old joglo (the core of a traditional Javanese timber house), which spent 15 years in storage before its owners found the “right place” to resurrect it. A passion to share and celebrate the rich heritage of Bali and Java is further revealed through an intriguing collection of museum-quality antiques, artefacts, artwork, curios and objets trouvés from early Indonesia and the Dutch colonial period. In fact, there is a story behind each and every treasure, from the roll-top desk and the neatly-framed hotchpotch of sepia postcards to the heavy-duty Dutch safe, the 1940s radios, and the old Southeast Asian travel posters promoting the Royal Dutch Airlines and the ubiquitous Pan Am Clipper flying boats. In addition to the open-sided joglo, which serves as a living/dining pavilion, Des Indes II presents two master suites (complete with private den-libraries), two additional bedrooms suitable for children over 12 (or guests who wish to bring their own staff), a bar, and a fully-equipped kitchen, as well as a decadent lawn that is perfect for hosting weddings and parties.
The property is ideally suited for two couples or a small family (with older children due to all those priceless antiques). Guests will be indulged with personal butler service, the gastronomic creations of a five-star chef, precious niceties such as afternoon tea served out of silver teapots, and innovative activities including ‘antique tours’. There is a suggestion menu and the staff will do the provisioning (on guest account).
Villa Des Indes II is a petite version of its big brother, Villa Des Indes I (Note: Lower rates are available when booking Des Indes I and Des II together. Contact Customer Service for assistance), across the driveway but by no means is the experience diminutive in any way. The original’s eclectic charm and colonial grandeur has been recreated impeccably on a smaller scale.

The villa is heralded by a pair of timeworn Chinese doors, beyond which is the open-air living and dining room incorporated within an ancient Javanese joglo, lovingly furnished with cushioned wooden sofas, plantation chairs, oriental rugs, a dining table for four, and an afternoon tea table. A guest washroom is positioned to one side.
On the far side of the joglo is a two-storey colonial-style building housing the two fully-air-conditioned master suites, which are both the same size and layout; one is on the ground floor and the other is upstairs. Each suite, with its timber-panelled walls and recycled teakwood floors, contains a bedroom with an antique four-poster king-size bed, an ensuite bathroom, dressing room, den-library, and private balcony or terrace. The bathrooms are fitted with walk-in rain showers, twin reproduction pedestal washbasins, and over-sized free-standing bathtubs. The dressing rooms offer wardrobes, plenty of storage space and dressing tables, while the balcony and terrace are both furnished with loungers. Guests will relish the ambience of a bygone era within the cosy den-libraries, complete with lazy chairs, deeply cushioned sofas/pull-out beds (suitable for kids), brass lamps, desks, and bookcases full of reading books, reference books and coffee table books. Modern technology includes electronic safe deposit boxes, a flat-screen satellite-channel TV with DVD player and iPod docking station in each bedroom, as well as a small flat-screen TV in each den-library.
On the ground terrace is a bar with high stools and a brass bell to ring for service. Tucked away to one side is a modern service kitchen, fully equipped with a 5-burner gas hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher, and exquisite tableware and glassware.
There are two additional, single, air-conditioned bedrooms above the kitchen area, suitable for guests travelling with staff. The rooms are available for older children but please note that the exit area runs through the kitchen making the rooms unsuitable for children under 12 years old. These two rooms share a shower room.
The garden comprises a free-form lagoon-style swimming pool and a 900sqm lawn, which is perfect for weddings, dance performances and traditional dinners under the stars.
