Dea Villas - Villa Dewi Sri

Easy tropical living is what you will find at the very elegant Villa Dewi Sri, named after the Hindu rice goddess. To the Balinese she represents all that is good and beautiful – the ‘rice mother’ of fertility and life. Shrines honouring Dewi Sri can be seen in every rice field in Bali and here at her namesake, that same beauty is inherent in every detail.

Entered via stepping stones over an exotic lily pond and through a long hallway under a clear pergola roof, Dewi Sri is distinguished by an open-sided living and dining pavilion surrounding a lush garden and 17m pool, complete with shallow end for kids, a wide shelf with jacuzzi jets, and a feature river boulder. The dwelling is further enhanced by garden-bathrooms, a fully-equipped modern kitchen, and feature-piece vine-covered pergola, against a backdrop of mature coconut trees and working rice fields, all washed by a gentle breeze.

There are so many places to relax at Dewi Sri, from the sun loungers surrounding the pool, to the swinging bed on the terrace, to the sofas and chairs in the living room and the large, comfortable family room/home theatre. Each bedroom also has its own private space – be it a secret garden or sun-soaked rooftop terrace – to escape to when you want to be alone.

This is a great place for families and groups, and little ones can be easily supervised from the living areas. Movie nights are a big bonus with huge sofas and a 49-inch screen in the air conditioned family room; these sofas double as extra kids’ sleeping spaces should there be more than the allotted 2.3 per couple. For more energetic technology, Nintendo is plugged into the big screen downstairs.

Villa Dewi Sri can be rented on its own or in conjunction with any of the other four Dea Villas – Villa Radha (one bedroom), Villa Amy (three bedrooms), Villas Sarasvati and Sati (both 4 bedrooms) – which collectively offer a total of 16 bedrooms. The five villas share facilities at the Dea Spa: indoor and outdoor treatment areas, a sauna and jacuzzi, as well as a fully-equipped gym, children’s playground and staff service area.

Meals can be selected from a fixed price menu and are prepared by an excellent chef and served by a personal butler. Breakfast, WiFi access, and a car and driver are all included in the daily rate.

At Villa Dewi Sri, you can step straight onto the pool deck from the open-sided living and dining pavilion, which extends the length of the garden, and is equipped with a big screen for playing Nintendo Wii and a four-speaker music system. This spacious fan-cooled room comprises a sitting area, a dining table for 12, and a fully-equipped feature kitchen, crafted in chocolate and cream marble. A guest washroom is positioned to one side. At the far end, is a pergola-shaded deck, dripping in white-flowering thunbergia, and furnished with sofas and chairs. Here honey-hued teak pillars match the warmth of the afternoon sunlight, and the eye is drawn to the rice field and narrow stream bordered by a procession of palms. The 17m swimming pool is lined with mixed green java stone, and completed with a bench-shelf and jacuzzi jets to provide a soothing back massage.

The four air conditioned bedrooms are characterised by different colour themes; each with sophisticated furnishings and equipped with a 32-inch satellite-channel TV and DVD player. The two master rooms, ‘Zen’ and ‘Tropical’, situated downstairs, have king-size beds, dressing areas and air conditioned glass-walled bathrooms complete with bathtubs, monsoon showers and non-slip floors. These bathrooms open into totally private gardens. One is a Zen-inspired, Japanese garden planted with yellow bamboo and punctuated with primitive stone features. The other is planted with brightly coloured tropical shrubs and parlour palms. There is a terrace in front of both of the ground floor bedrooms, overlooking the garden. The two upstairs bedrooms are furnished with twin beds, which can be converted to queen-size beds. The adjoining dressing rooms are open to the ensuite bathrooms, each with a monsoon shower and a private, roof top terrace. Located between these bedrooms is a cosy air conditioned family room, which serves as a home theatre, equipped with a 49-inch satellite channel TV and DVD player. These rooms lead onto a wide and breezy balcony terrace at the front, offering a delightful view. The flat roof of the living pavilion below is planted with long grass, which blends with the rice field environment and honours the Hindu rice goddess after which the villa is named.

Shared facilities at Dea Villas include: Dea Spa, with massage room, outdoor treatment area, sauna, jacuzzi and showers; a fully-equipped, air-conditioned gym, and a children’s playground with sandpit, Wendy house, swings and slides. Here, parents can relax on cushions within an antique balé while they watch over their kids.
