The Dutch House
The Dutch House is an exquisite example of exceptional colonial heritage whose preservation has been carefully merged with contemporary interior design features. Pillared verandahs and courtyards, soaring timber ceilings, polished cement floors and original door and window frames featuring oversized keys and locks create a feeling of tranquil nostalgia. Shelves and cupboards are artistically arranged with an eclectic variety of books, exquisite arrangements of exotic flowers top embellished antique chests whilst vivid contemporary artwork hugs the whitewashed walls. Lamps provide the whole house with a seductive glow come evening when the drinks cabinet in the cosy sofa-filled Living Room is flung open to reveal an eclectic variety of spirits which can be enjoyed convivially from plenty of beautifully reflective spots on the property.
The garden of The Dutch House is large and makes you forget that you are in the middle of a busy town. It features a croquet lawn and extends from the pillared courtyard down the hillside where an infinity swimming pool is discreetly located under a huge mango tree. The Dutch House is wonderfully looked after by a team of mainly female staff who gracefully anticipate guests’ every need. Whilst dinner is served in sister property the Sun House just across the road, guests can privately dine in any one of many scenic spots at the Dutch House, with advance notice. The villa is perfect for families, groups of friends and especially couples who will adore the property’s privacy and seclusion.

On entering The Dutch House, you pass up some stone steps bearing the engraving ‘Doornberg 1712’ and cross a small tiled verandah into a reception hallway which leads into the refined Living Room with bar that opens onto a furnished verandah overlooking the grassy lawn. With shelves liberally filled with books, magazines, CDs and board games, cosy cushioned sofas and interesting artwork dominated by the huge ‘faces’ painting to one end, the Living Room is an evocative place to relax by day or, when the tall drinks cabinet is opened at sunset, by night when lamplight provides a seductive glow.
Two of the Dutch House’s four gorgeous suites open from here; the Yellow Room and the Blue Room. Both suites are mirror images of each other and feature a large antique four-poster bed draped with soft mosquito netting and a separate lounge featuring sofa seating and doors opening onto the garden. Each bathroom is luxuriously fitted with a free standing bathtub, twin basins and a separate rain shower. The suites overlook the front driveway and garden, are characterised by silk drapes and personified by art and antiques. The Yellow Room has an especially impressive writing desk separating the lounge from the bathroom.
As you continue through the Living Room, you pass onto a sweeping verandah that leads past a small kitchen to the final two suites. The VOC Suite directly opens onto the back and front gardens and features a cosy entrance lounge that leads into the bedroom and bathroom. Further along the verandah is The Ballroom; as the most majestic suite in size and decoration it features a large garden-view lounge with impressive oak doors, sofa seating and shelves full of books, which is separated from the bedroom by towering silk drapes that are theatrically pulled closed at night. This suite, like the other three, features an antique four poster double bed, writing desk, sofa seating and a modern bathroom with tub, rain shower and twin basins. Each suite is uniquely characterised by beautiful antique furnishings, artwork and heritage prints.
