East Residence and Spa
The passion poured into this villa is astounding, but it’s the magnificent gardens, tended daily by three gardeners, that are the owner’s greatest pride and joy. Defined by terraced landscaping, the grounds fall naturally into three distinct areas dissected by the diminutive River Subak. Stone steps cut through sloping manicured lawns interspersed with banana plants, exotic blooms and water features. At the bottom, three traditional thatched balés (gazebos) stand, bordered by jungle, on a ledge beside another river; an idyllic setting for yoga and meditation.
The property successfully marries modern and traditional Balinese with western comforts. The owners, along with on-site manager, Raka, personally sourced the high-quality, predominantly Balinese furniture and the imported Italian fixtures. Built in 2008, the villa’s ‘newness’ is evident; from the dedicated TV room to the sparkly ensuite bathrooms with contemporary fittings to the pristine pool-deck area. Yet bedrooms and out-buildings feature traditional high ceilings, and exquisite Indonesian artworks and artefacts (such as antique Sulawesi warrior jackets) abound. Although East Residence and Spa evokes a boutique resort feel, the owner’s underlying ‘home away from home’ vision is foremost.
The welcoming staff team of ten, including on-site manager, Raka, are always on-hand but are the height of discretion. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared by chef Made (Mar-day) from a suggestion menu of Indonesian and international favourites. Grocery provisions for all meals are charged at cost price, although first day breakfast is complimentary. And if you can bear to leave the villa, a seven-seater car plus driver is available for up to eight hours per day, with petrol at extra cost.

East Residence is entered through hand-crafted front doors which open into an oblong-shaped living-dining room. Encircled by glass doors and sheer white curtains, this airy, open-plan room lets in lots of natural light and affords maximum vantage point for the centre-piece infinity-edge pool (20 x 6m), which appears to spectacularly drop off into a tropical rainforest setting. The pool area itself features a kid’s pool and sunken bar, while the expansive wooden deck provides four comfy sunbeds.
On the living-dining room’s right-hand side is a massive antique wooden dining table seating ten, just behind which is a spacious, well-equipped, open-plan kitchen, bordered by a solid Borneo wood counter. The kitchen boasts an Italian oven and a ginormous gleaming refrigerator with ice-making facilities. Beyond is a decent-sized staff kitchen and walk-in pantry, plus one of three discreetly placed guest washrooms. On the opposite side of the living room is the functional TV room, complete with 58-inch plasma satellite TV (with 99 channels!) and a stack of DVDs, plus an office, supplying iPods, computer, fax and printer. WiFi Internet is accessible in the living-dining room and pool area.
From here, a solid wood staircase leads to the first floor and four spacious, air conditioned, ensuite bedrooms with balconies overlooking rice fields and gardens. All bedrooms have king-sized beds with quality bed linen upon outrageously comfortable mattresses, and stylish bathrooms with glass cubicle showers. The master bedroom features a sunken bathtub and his n’ hers vanity. The master bedroom and Rainforest Cottage also feature large plasma TV screens and DVD players.
Below the pool, the Rainforest Cottage resembles a honeymooner’s lodge. Facing the jungle and river, it has two porches plus a tropical-style bathroom with stand-alone bathtub. Open to the elements, modesty prevails courtesy of banana plants and concertina-style opaque panelling.
On the opposite side of the gardens, beside a scenic waterfall, the charming open living pavilion is a marvellous spot for afternoon teas, lunches and sundowners with a dining table seating eight. There’s a small adjoining kitchen and simple barbecue on-hand.
Next door, the spa comprises a treatment room with two massage beds, outdoor bathroom with traditional stone bath, plus veranda with vintage leather recliners, perfect for reflexology treatments. Massages can also be enjoyed at four other balés. A sound system runs to both out-buildings.
