Eden Villas - 5BR Nala (Riverside)
It’s fair to say, in general, that minimalism in Bali has been overworked, excessively imitated, and commonly misunderstood. Eden Villas, however, is an impressive exception. Here, both the architectural and interior design concept rediscovers the value of empty space, utilises basic geometric shapes as outlines and combines smooth textures and a dramatic all-white palette with perfect planes. The beauty of Eden is in its simplicity; the Spanish-inspired design embraces nature with pergola-shaded balconies and verandas, a dazzling white exterior and trailing green vines, all of which sharply contrast with the intense blue of the swimming pools and the sky.
With white terrazzo floors and creamy-white polished concrete interior walls throughout, all-white furnishings and the occasional white-framed mirror, Eden Villas are arranged in three blocks (Seaside, Riverside and Garden View), complemented by flat-lawned gardens planted with giant taro, palms and white-flowering frangipanis beside large L-shaped swimming pools. Room sizes are extremely generous and rooftop gardens offer breezy view-filled spaces for social gatherings or a private soak in a jacuzzi tub. Bedrooms are laid out on two or three floors and vistas are of mountains and river or ocean and beach (the latter being less than 150m away).
Despite the formulaic design – each villa is virtually identical apart from the number of bedrooms and the varying outlooks – Eden itself is unique, funky and cool as ice. The only ornamentation in these minimalist villas is a series of white artefacts including Buddha heads and statues. There is something quite astonishing about waking up in a white bed under a snowy-white net within an all-white room. Now here’s a thought… imagine an all-white wedding at the all-white Eden Villas.
A full, professional team of staff including butlers, an in-villa chef, housekeeping and security, serves Eden Villas under the supervision of a manager. The villas can be rented separately or jointly and, as there are a total of 55 bedrooms, the complex works particularly well for large groups. There is both a menu and grocery system (provisions, at cost, on guest account).

The nexus of the riverside Villa Nala is the living space – open to the garden and pool – which is characterised by big, round, white, polished-concrete pillars and huge built-in wraparound daybeds, complete with a satellite-channel TV/DVD player and iPod dock. At the front of the living area is a sloping pergola-roof fitted with frosted glass panels; this architectural feature creates the look and feel of a Mediterranean veranda. The adjacent dining area is furnished with a white table and ten goblet-shaped white wicker chairs beside a simple open-plan kitchen. Crafted in white terrazzo and well-equipped with an oven, five-burner gas hob, fridge and microwave, the kitchen features a service bar with three stools.
Guests can relax poolside upon sunloungers on the neat lawn or in a contemporary-styled polished concrete balé pavilion with rotund columns, a mattress and cushions. The 69sqm L-shaped swimming pool is cleverly designed to be shallow on one side while the other arm of the ‘L’ is perfect for swimming laps; it is fed by a cascade of water and facilitated with an outdoor pool shower.
There are five air conditioned bedrooms at Villa Nala, one on the ground floor, two on the first floor and two on the second floor. Four are furnished with king-size beds and one with twin beds, as well as built-in cushioned seats or daybeds, French-styled boudoir chairs, and a satellite-channel TV (except for the ground-floor bedroom). Picture windows (and balconies on the second floor) overlook the pool, garden and river, with views from the upper floors extending to the sea. Each spacious ensuite bathroom is fitted with a sculptured terrazzo tub, a walk-in rain shower and huge wall mirrors. The ground floor bathroom at Nala doubles as a spa room where guests can enjoy massages and body treatments while being lulled by the sound of a cascading wall of water.
Finally, a spiral staircase leads to a breezy rooftop deck with a wide lawn, an open-air jacuzzi tub for two and large sofas with seating space for 16. From here, there are open sky views to the ocean and Bali’s coastline, the river, the treetops and – on a clear day – the mountains.
This villa can be linked to the three-bedroom villa next door to create an eight-bedroom option.
