Ellerton
Housing two of the five bedrooms, Ellerton bungalow is a refurbished planter’s home, originally built over 100 years ago, whose ambient colonial character has been carefully preserved. Although the restoration of the bungalow saw the addition of contemporary luxuries such as comfortable beds and modern bathrooms, the essential colonial features – polished red cement floors, green roofs and wrap around verandahs – have been carefully preserved to add to its nostalgic ambiance and charm. Cabinets filled with ageing books merge with magazines of today, whilst carefully chosen antiques, ceramics, silverware, paintings and photographs personalise the property and make it feel like home.
On the site of an old tea factory within the Ellerton estate, and making the most of the panoramic views, the owners have constructed a second building, the Valley House. Built to complement the original bungalow, it has a more contemporary feel to it and is enhanced by its proximity to the stunningly situated swimming pool which has marvellous valley views. Ellerton has a discreet staff of nine, including a chef who is happy to discuss meal requirements on a daily basis (food is fixed price per meal on guest account). Guests will enjoy wandering among Ellerton’s colourful rambling gardens, accompanied by Ben the black lab who is always keen for a walk. Bicycles are also available to use making this an excellent base for anyone wanting to get out into the countryside and explore.

Ellerton comprises two parts; the original estate bungalow and the Valley House. The entrance to the bungalow is characterised by a wide wraparound verandah with multiple French windows, whilst a doorway on the other side of the house opens onto a grassy lawn. Inside, the living room is a sophisticated social space featuring cushioned seating, oriental rugs atop rust-red floors and a fitting variety of colonial antiques such as planters’ chairs and an elegant grandfather clock. The house also comprises a study with satellite TV and DVD player as well as an elegant dining room with long wooden dining table seating ten guests.
Two wide archways lead from the living room into the hallway which runs the length of the house. Leading off to the left, and overlooking the garden, is a twin bedroom and adjoining single room with sofa seating and en-suite bathroom with shower and tub; each bed has a mosquito net suspended above it and is draped with a pretty woven bedcover. At the opposite end of the house is another garden-view bedroom with a blue-and-white porcelain colour scheme featuring a four-poster double bed, dressing room and en-suite bathroom with shower and tub.
A few steps from the bungalow is the Valley House, located just above the swimming pool. A curtain of crimson passion flower greets you as you step onto the deep verandah, furnished with concrete cushioned seating and a dining table with panoramic views. There are three rooms here; two doubles and a twin as well as a library packed with hundreds of interesting books, a CD player, a mini fridge, a phone and a kettle.
Of the three rooms the split-level middle double is the largest; with a comfortable four-poster bed overlooking a lounge and writing desk, it has multiple windows overlooking the garden and Ellerton’s largest bathroom with tub, twin washbasins and shower. The second bedroom in the Valley House features a double bed, canopied mosquito net and an en-suite bathroom with separate tub and shower. The red and white twin room has two single beds with nets and a bathroom with shower. All bedrooms are fan-cooled.
