Villa Frangipani

Villa Frangipani is the Bali equivalent of a simple but absolutely delightful English country cottage. Nestling in gardens overflowing with heliconias, palms and, of course, frangipanis this ten-year-old property (built 1999) oozes with charm as it pleasantly ages. Sitting back in the evening on one of the planters' chairs, a G&T in hand, surrounded by trees, with the free-form 16m swimming pool and moss-covered statues lit up before you, insects and birdsong as the only soundtrack (no noisy cars, bikes, bars or restaurants here), it is not difficult to enjoy a much needed break from the rigours of everyday life. The equally charming staff – who cook, clean, shop (on guest account) and serve, as well as entertain children – help ensure this is a truly relaxing holiday for all.

Set over three terraces that ease down to a musical stream, the four-bedroom Villa Frangipani is one of eight villas, each unique in nature – no cookie-cutter estate here – in a quiet cul-de-sac within the tiny village of Pererenan in the district of Canggu. Bali’s famous surfing beaches are just up the road whilst Seminyak with all its shops, bars and restaurants is just 15 minutes away by car. The villa is built in the traditional Balinese style, with a strong emphasis on natural materials - teak columns lead up to vaulted ceilings with bamboo linings and cooling overhead fans. Simple teak-wood furniture sits on stone, marble and wood floors whilst moss-wrapped statues litter the terraces that open up to the sweet smelling gardens.

Perhaps in need of a touch-up here and some modernisation there, Villa Frangipani feels lived in – in the nicest possible way. Modern elements such as satellite TV and wireless internet ensure you are not totally cut off from the outside world, although it is tempting to turn them all off and enjoy the serene setting of this wonderfully charming property.

Step through the wooden gates set in traditional red-brick walls and head down the steps and over a pond to the heavy teak entrance doors. These slide back and reveal a large lounge area featuring heavy teak furniture, polished wood floors and a vaulted alang alang (thatched) ceiling with lazy overhead fans (this room also has air conditioning). A huge ancient-looking teak TV/Stereo cabinet and traditional daybed dominate the room. Opposite, large glass doors slide back to reveal a covered terrace which drops into a delightful free-form swimming pool (16m at its longest) overhung by a twisting frangipani. Open on three sides and with polished terrazzo floors, the terrace has a seating area furnished with upholstered teak benches and a simple dining table seating eight. Just up from the table are possibly the best seats in the house – two traditional planters chairs where one can take the weight off ones feet, sip a G&T or read a good book and watch nature hard at work in the mature gardens.

A stone staircase takes you around the side of the pool down to the lowest terrace and an annex bedroom (with queen-size bed and TV), a hidden lawn and a small massage pavilion (which doubles as a kids playhouse), all set in the bend of the boundary stream. The annex bedroom has equally comfortable planters’ chairs on a covered terrace and a moss-strewn, outdoor, ensuite shower room.

The three remaining bedrooms are off the lounge. The highlights of the huge master bedroom are a four-poster queen-size bed and semi-outdoor ensuite complete with sunken bath. The remaining bedrooms are twin- and triple-bedded – with traditional creaking Balinese teak beds. The twin has windows overlooking the gardens whilst the triple is at the back of the house - perfect for morning lie-ins. These two bedrooms share a bathroom with sunken tub and overhead shower. Adjacent to the bathroom is a study with an imposing teak writing desk. All the bedrooms are air conditioned, rather sparsely furnished, and have high ceilings and terrazzo floors.

At the rear of the villa, next to the main entrance, is the kitchen. Simple and a little dated in design, it is primarily the domain of the staff who hide here or in the rear courtyard until needed.
