Villa Gajah

Villa Gajah offers something in Seminyak that’s becoming increasingly rare: space. Located smack bang in the middle of town it sits on one and a half acres of mature tropical garden filled with exotic trees and plants overhanging fluffy green lawns. Gnarled frangipani and bougainvillea create an natural shady avenue for the awesomely long lap pool, scattering their petals indulgently into the water and making a swim here feel more like invigorating exercise in a fresh jungle stream.

Villa Gajah’s five bedrooms are spread thoughtfully down the length of the elongated garden in differently styled buildings so that they offer peace, privacy and disparity from each other. The master bedroom is the most indulgent and adjoins the open-plan traditional alang alang-roofed lounge whose giant bamboo sofas, huge dining table and eye-catching elephant mural (Gajah means elephant in Bahasa Indonesia) mimic the room’s generous proportions.

The design of this homely property is classic Bali and whilst its generous living space and ambient nature make it a fabulously social house for families and groups, it is just as suitable for those searching for solitude, since there are plenty of places where peace can be found; atop cushions in the poolside balé (gazebo), pumping iron in the gym or quietly reading a book beside the lily pond at the far end of the garden.

Although there’s a well-equipped kitchen at Gajah you don’t have to travel far from the villa to reach a selection of restaurants serving excellent international cuisine. However for Indonesian food your best bet is to stay in as Gajah’s chef whips up wonderful home-cooked local dishes that are deliciously satisfying (provisions, at cost, on guest account). The manager lives to the rear of the property and can be called upon at any reasonable time. There are few requests he’s unable to satisfy; from airport transfers to helicopter rides to organising the shipment of your shopping back home.

Villa Gajah’s five bedrooms are housed across three buildings. The main house features a traditional alang alang roof with polished concrete floors. The living room, cooled by whirring fans dangling from the rafters, takes up much of this building and is the villa’s prime social space, with a cascading water feature and oversized bamboo sofas that reflect the generous proportions of the room. Large cushions litter the floor whilst a dining table (seating up to 14) is located on one side of the room. The kitchen leads off from here and is equipped with a large oven, hotplates, microwave, double-door fridge and coffee machine.

The generous air conditioned master bedroom opens onto the living room and comprises a king-size, four-poster bed wrapped in mosquito netting, relaxed lounge seating overlooking the garden, large screen LCD TV and modern terrazzo-finished bathroom with twin sinks, smoothly polished tub, rain shower and walk-in wardrobe.

A study or TV Room also adjoins the living room and features a Chinese opium bed, a giant flat-screen TV, a computer, telephone and printer. Since the bed can easily sleep two children or one adult it could be used as a sixth bedroom if necessary as there is an adjoining bathroom with shower.

At the furthest end of the garden is the guest house, whose bedrooms share a serene verandah where a bamboo sofa overlooks a pond dotted with pink and white water lilies. Invisible from the main house, this building offers the most privacy. The two very similar bedrooms are air conditioned and each have a pair of mosquito-netted giant bamboo beds that can be conveniently arranged as either a king or as twins. Each room also has a LCD cable TV and DVD player, cupboard space and an ensuite bathroom with shower.

The stilted wooden house at the centre of the garden features two identical air conditioned bedrooms with pretty white rattan double beds, ceiling-hung mosquito netting, wardrobes and picture windows overlooking the garden and 38m-long, swimming pool. Ensuite bathrooms at the rear of this lime-washed building come with a shower.

Between the main house and the wooden house is an alang alang-roofed, open-sided gym with a selection of machinery including weights and an exercise bike.
