The Garden House
The Garden House’s tranquil nature-filled outlook has changed little since its establishment over a century ago, although the house itself has undergone extensive renovations in the last few years. Elongated rooms, high vaulted ceilings, original jack-wood floors and embellished arches are all fabulous architectural remnants of the property’s colonial past that have been meticulously incorporated into the now very spacious build alongside a mix of contemporary and colonial furnishings that provide all the necessary comforts of home. The decor is simple and the lighting subtle with an obvious emphasis on complete relaxation; deep verandas, wide picture windows and intimate private balconies furnished with comfy seating offer places to appreciate the outdoors and allow for quiet intimate moments even when staying at the house with a group.
The Garden House has five bedrooms in total with four in the main house and a fifth in a self-contained cottage which comes with its own living space and kitchenette. The main house has a fully-equipped kitchen and the property benefits from a small team of staff including a housekeeper who is geared to cook your every meal (provisions on guests’ account) or leave you alone to self-cater if you’d prefer. The Garden House is such a tranquil haven that when the gates close it really feels like the only place on earth, however it should not be forgotten that the equally mesmerising gorgeous south coast beaches are only an easy ten-minute drive away.

Entry into The Garden House is across an elongated veranda that offers simple seating overlooking the lush garden. Cross into the house itself and you arrive in a similarly elongated living room with sofa and lounge seating to either side of the entrance and a multitude of wide shuttered windows looking out towards the garden. Directly ahead and under a wide embellished archway is a small hallway with timber staircase that leads up to the Hibiscus Suite on the first floor. Comprising an attached landing dressing area with wardrobe, this spacious fan-cooled bedroom has a four-poster queen-size bed, rattan lounge seating and lots of windows flung open to admire the views. The ensuite bathroom is fitted with twin sinks and a shower.
At the heart of The Garden House is a partly open-air atrium which connects the front living area and Hibiscus Suite with the rear bedrooms and kitchen. To one side of this atrium is a small study with writing desk and bookshelves whilst on the other, past a small inner garden, is a deep veranda for living and dining that directly overlooks the swimming pool. Beyond the atrium is a passageway leading to the kitchen which is equipped with an oven, hot plates and all the necessary crockery and cooking utensils for self-caterers.
A second staircase leads up from the atrium to two more bedrooms – Allananda and Araliya – both of which have small private balconies overlooking the garden. Each room is fan-cooled and comes with a queen-size four-poster bed, a selection of lounge seating and ensuite bathrooms with showers. A further double bedroom – The Garden Room – is found on the ground floor opening directly onto the garden close to the living and dining veranda. This room is the only one that’s air conditioned and comes with an ensuite bathroom with shower.
Situated a short distance from the house and elevated to the side of the garden is a self-contained cottage. The open-plan interior is large and comprises a dining area and a kitchenette on the ground floor with a few steps leading up to a double ensuite mezzanine bedroom with views over the garden. The Cottage is fan-cooled and comes with a dressing room, bathroom and furnished front veranda.
