The Purist - Garden Residence

Imagine escaping to a private villa enclave bordered by jungle on the banks of a steep ravine. Picture charming architecture, and a medley of funky furnishings and ethnic artefacts, harmonised with the remarkable use of indigenous stone and timber. Blend this with personal butler service, and a healthy menu of home-cooked delights, topped with lashings of pure sweet romance. The Garden Residence at The Purist Villas & Spa is a destination for lovers, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, yet only two kilometres from the centre of Ubud.

The Garden Residence comprises two one-bedroom pavilions – Garden Villa and Timor Villa – which can be rented independently or together, complete with private swimming pool. Guests can expect all the benefits of a private holiday villa, combined with the security, services and facilities of a boutique enclave, including a reception area, spa, restaurant, large main swimming pool, alfresco poolside café, free use of a neighbouring gym and free WiFi internet access. There is no kitchen for guest use; instead there is a main service kitchen for the complex, captained by an inspired chef who presents organic cooking from a menu that can be customised to suit any palate. In total, The Purist Villas & Spa offers eight, luxurious one and two-bedroom residences (including The Purist - River Residence).

What makes the Garden Residence so unique is that its two pavilions are totally different in both character and layout, yet linked by common factors such as the courtyard garden with pool, the design of the furnishings and bathroom fixtures, and the use of materials such as the two-toned, blond and brunette suar wood and local stone. Guests staying in Garden Villa and Timor Villa will experience two very different styles. The Timor Villa is rustic and quirky, its external panels created from the traditionally-carved teakwood walls of a historical old Timorese house. It features an open-plan design, a party deck with dining and sitting areas, an indoor/outdoor bathroom, and views of the jungle. The more compact Garden Villa, meanwhile, is more contemporary in style, with clean lines, smooth walls, an indoor bathroom – albeit open-air shower – and views of the swimming pool, garden and pool deck.

The Garden Residence is comprised of the Garden Villa and the Timor Villa. The two pavilions are positioned on two sides of a private swimming pool bordered by a broad timber deck furnished with luxurious antique double daybeds, a table and two chairs.

Garden Villa is heralded by a statue of Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and god of making things happen. The building is accessed via a small open-air sitting area with a built-in sofa and a table. A door leads into a spacious air conditioned bedroom characterised by a creamy-white Palimanan stone wall and floor, and glass doors that open to the swimming pool. It is furnished with a queen-size bed and upholstered sofa, and equipped with a TV and DVD player. The ensuite bathroom is fitted with double river rock washbasins resting upon a suar wood vanity unit beneath a stunning circular glass-framed mirror. There is also a walk-in rain shower and a free-standing bathtub crafted in dark grey terrazzo.

Timor Villa takes its name from the carved wooden panels from the Indonesian island of Timor, which make up its exterior walls. On the jungle view side, this villa has a huge, elevated timber deck: one section is roofed, features a screen-wall of red Lombok rock, and is furnished with a dining table for four. At the other end of the deck is an open-air sitting area furnished with a large sofa, two armchairs and a Timorese table.

Inside the villa is an expansive open-plan air-conditioned room with a two-toned suar wood floor. On one side is the sleeping area, furnished with a queen-size four-poster bed, lamps, and a TV and DVD player. In the middle is a huge L-shaped sofa and table, and at the far end is the dressing area, complete with two rustic river rock washbasins. A pair of double doors showcasing Komodo dragon carvings opens to reveal a garden bathroom, sheltered by a pergola roof. Here, an ancient stone statue stands guard next to a rain shower and a bath tub, which rests beside a glassless window with a majestic river valley view.
