Bahagia Park - Garden Villa II

  • Location: Umalas-Kerobokan
  • Number of bedrooms: 2
The tropics are synonymous with the colour green; broad leafed plants, tall palms and flowering shrubs all thrive in the heat of the equatorial zones. To be surrounded by all of this in a private villa is a great introduction to Bali, and Garden Villa II certainly fits the bill. The style is contemporary-colonial, with two chic bedrooms, a compact yet fully equipped modern kitchen, a swimming pool, and a delightful outdoor living area, making it ideal for couples, a small family, or for business travellers who don’t want to be found.

The villa’s two large bedrooms – one of which incorporates a comfortable sitting area – are enhanced with tropical flair. Glass doors open out to a long covered veranda where antique colonial plantation chairs, a dining table and a cushioned daybed invite you to sit, read, talk, listen to music, drink sundowners and maybe do a little bit of work on your computer – if you really must! Wifi is available.

What’s more, Garden Villa II is linked – by an enchanting bridge over the private swimming pool – to neighbouring, one-bedroomed Garden Villa I, thereby offering a three-bedroom renting option, while adding Temple Villa (with private pool and two-bedrooms) to the mix, brings the rental possibility up to five bedrooms. All are single storey and completely self-contained with individual entrances (a gated fence separates the two Garden Villas), yet their proximity to one another means that they work well for extended families or groups who want to be close to one other while still retaining an element of independence and privacy.

For those who like to swim laps, two large communal pools, each with shaded balés (gazebos), are positioned on different levels within a central garden, linked by winding pathways amid a manicured jungle of green.

Accessed by a long driveway off a quiet street in a peaceful residential suburb just north of Seminyak, the villas have full security, a manager and maid service. Breakfast is served on request (extra charge), but otherwise they are self-catered. Although the staffing is limited it does ensure total privacy, meaning complete relaxation and no unnecessary intrusions.

Garden Villa II is entered from Bahagia Park’s communal garden via a modern Balinese gateway. The interior of the single-storey villa has a contemporary feel, with merbau wood floors and dark red curtains. Sliding glass doors, which admit plenty of natural light, link both bedrooms to the veranda.

Each bedroom is furnished with a queen size-bed resting in front of a stone wall. Behind this is a walk-in dressing area with fitted wardrobes and plenty of storage space. The larger of the two bedrooms also incorporates a comfortable sitting area, furnished with a sunny yellow sofa, a coffee table and two ottomans. Both bedrooms are equipped with air-conditioning and a TV (one is a satellite-channel TV while the other is to support a DVD player). The main bathroom can be accessed from both bedrooms. Large and spacious, it is fashioned in Palimanan stone and sparkling terrazzo, with a vanity unit, sculpted washbasin and a powerful walk-in rain shower. Additionally, a tiny, semi-open-air bathroom with a toilet and shower serves the smaller bedroom.

The immaculate kitchen is positioned at the front of the villa between the two bedrooms. It is small but fully equipped for guest use with an imported oven and five-burner gas hob, a fridge, kettle, toaster and a good range of pots, pans and quality tableware.

An attractive 3 x 10m, colonial-style veranda runs the length of the villa, furnished with plantation-style rattan chairs, a low-backed colonial daybed, opium table, and a dining table for four. Sun loungers rest under the open sky upon an extension of the deck which borders one end of the private and very pretty swimming pool which is for the sole use of guests at Garden Villa II but can be shared with guests at Garden Villa I if they are part of the same party. The narrow-but-pretty walled garden is planted with mature pandanus and frangipani trees as well as heliconia and palms.
