Moon Cove - Hai Leng

  • Location: Cape Panwa
  • Number of bedrooms: 4
Part of the intimate Moon Cove estate, Hai Leng villa is a bay-watcher's dream, found directly on the beach at the small yet bustling Yon Bay at the tip of Cape Panwa on Phuket's south-east coast. Still largely undiscovered by the tourist hordes, Ao Yon is a real working bay, with traditional long-tail fishing boats puttering past sparkling yachts, and strings of colourful buoys at the centre marking a cultured pearl operation. Positioned to take full advantage of the bay views, Hai Leng offers guests a fantastic opportunity to observe Phuket's coastal life, especially from its wide marble terrace and 15 x 10m infinity pool in turquoise tile that matches the bay's jewel-like tones. Stretching across the front of this villa is the shared estate garden, offering lots of running-around space for the kids and direct access to the sands. At the beachfront corner is a pétanque pitch, where you can test your boule-throwing skills in tree-shaded comfort.

Each of the four bedrooms has a private bathroom and its own distinct appeal. The master bedroom offers the best sea views, and from its big semi-open-air shower, you can make a dramatic entry into the pool by jumping straight in from the shower room’s Japanese wooden doors. A twin-bedded room, ideal for children, sits just beside the master suite while the other two bedrooms, both with king-size beds, are on different levels for an added touch of privacy.

Moon Cove estate is staffed by two housekeepers and a groundsman who take care of all three villas and live in separate quarters on site. Breakfast is included in the rate and a professional Thai chef may be hired to prepare other meals for an extra charge, plus grocery costs. The modern kitchen is well equipped for those who wish to self cater, and dining spaces include the formal dining room and a covered terrace for alfresco meals.

Larger groups can rent Hai Leng together with Noble House or Taipan villas, its neighbours on this exclusive estate. Car hire is essential if venturing out, with scenic roads around the cape to explore and some of Phuket's best restaurants within easy reach.

Awash in light-toned marble, Hai Leng has a casual elegance with a blend of Sino-Portuguese and Japanese styles reflecting the owner's taste and travels. The 15m swimming pool overlooking the garden and sea forms the central focus, surrounded by wide terracing. Anchoring the front corner is the master bedroom, with a large semi-outdoor shower that opens onto the pool through handsome Japanese doors. Its four-poster king-size bed and spacious walk-through wardrobe leading to a private bathroom with a second shower and free-form bathtub make this room ideal for couples. Kids will enjoy the room next door, also just steps away from the pool, with twin beds and an ensuite bathroom. Directly above this is a third bedroom with a king-size bed and ensuite bathroom with shower, and a small balcony with sea views, which those seeking some added privacy will covet. The largest and most private bedroom is on the bottom level with direct access to the garden, featuring a bamboo theme with a king-size bed and sofa, and a spacious bathroom with a free-form bathtub.

Those who savour sunrises will enjoy a morning coffee at the sturdy wooden dining table for six or on one of the elegant antique Burmese chairs, all undercover on the terrace. Back inside, the fully equipped teal-and-stainless-steel kitchen is furnished with a small table and bench seating – a perfect dining space for children. Behind the kitchen and through a grand Sino-Portuguese-style doorway is the regal dining room, where up to 12 people may enjoy meals around a gorgeous makha wood table. The living room, with its glass-walled front opening completely to the terrace, is a bright, relaxed area featuring striking white and wooden furnishings with colourful pillows and Asian decorative items adding personality. An ideal spot for curling up with a book or simply lounging and gazing out to sea.

Only the master suite and twin bedroom are equipped with air conditioning. All the other rooms have ceiling fans plus clerestory windows for added ventilation.
