Samsara Estate - Villa Hale Malia

This uber-sleek ode to modern style sits perched on the cliffs north of Patong town, overlooking the ocean and Patong Bay. Enclosed in a gated villa compound, at the end of a private road, the only danger of unwanted interruptions comes from the resident birdlife. As guests enter the property, the quality of the villa’s panoramic vista immediately becomes its defining factor – this villa certainly raises the bar for seaside rooms with a view.

With Scandinavian-inspired modern architecture, the villa is split over three levels, with the entrance on the top floor leading to an open-plan hall and staircase down to the living areas. One floor down the four bedrooms and TV room look out over terraces to the sloping garden below. Ever room in the villa faces the ocean, and from the edge of the infinity pool which juts out above the waves, you can soak up the natural splendour in style.

The interior design blends light woods and brushed concrete with glass and stainless steel to great effect. High vaulted wooden ceilings add to the spaciousness of the villa and the large windows flood the living spaces with natural light. With so much room spread over multi levels, there are excellent opportunities to find a quiet space to read a book or unwind. The decor is tastefully minimalist with no clues about the owners in the artwork: for the duration of your stay, it’s easy to maintain the illusion that this play pad is actually your own. Wooden sculptures, Buddhist pieces and understated artworks enhance but don’t distract from the vista – here the view is king and quite rightly so. Complementing this effortless sophistication the villa is very much in the 21st century – common rooms are wired for sound with a serious Bose system and there’s an impressive choice of DVDs to enjoy in the TV room with free WiFi conveniently on-hand. Ensuring your stay is as smooth as the ample marble surfaces, well-tuned service is on hand round the clock, preparing meals, shopping for groceries or mixing those essential mohitos as the sun goes down.

With the front entrance situated at the back of the property on the top floor of the villa guests enter into a small hallway with bathroom before descending the open staircase to the majestic living room area beneath and its breathtaking vaulted ceilings. With large sofas and coffee table, this looks out over the ocean to the front with sliding doors out to the BBQ terrace to the left and the swimming pool to the right. Past another bathroom takes you to the guest kitchen area and dining room where beyond sliding doors a small study offers a desk and printer and small library. Beyond the study a door leads out through a bathroom to the on-site sauna and steam room facilities.

All rooms naturally focus on the stunning vista of the Andaman Sea and the open-plan living areas all have access out to the terrace and outdoor sala pavilion. With the sliding glass doors, the villa can be either opened to the sea breezes or closed and chilled to guests’ satisfaction – the under-floor air-conditioning works a treat to escape the humidity or midday heat.

One floor down, loungers line the floor of the lower landing – a good place for kids to play when they’re not occupying the TV room, where a flat-screen TV is on hand for movies and satellite TV. Connected to the TV room, a small exercise room, shielded by sliding doors, offers yoga mats and inspiring garden view.

The four air-conditioned bedrooms on this floor all face towards the ocean and open onto terraces, some shared some private. At the end of the corridor, the master bedroom features sea views from the King-size bed and on the terrace, a Jacuzzi and sunken bath are perfect for sky watching on starry nights. For indoor bathing, there are twin sinks and separate rain shower in the en-suite bathroom. Other bedrooms include a twin for the children with a shared bathroom with the king bedroom next door and a decent-sized second king guest room at the end of the corridor with en-suite bathroom and sunken tub on its own private terrace. For larger families or groups, the TV room can easily be converted into an extra fifth bedroom.
