Indisch stands majestically over a sweeping curve of beach that it has almost to itself, surrounded by a spacious garden with generous swimming pool that from almost every angle enjoys excellent sea views. Inside, the villa has been thoughtfully designed: white walls and polished terrazzo floors make it look even bigger than it already is; a sound system is built into the living and dining areas whilst the kitchen is a triumph of tropical modern styling. The staircase is a particularly elegant inclusion; shallow steps lead up to the five bedrooms on the first floor under a ceiling that towers loftily overhead. A selection of faded antique door and window frames from Dutch-colonial Sri Lanka and Bali gloriously highlight the stunning Indonesian-Dutch or Indisch architectural design.

With its blend of elegant contemporary furnishings, wide verandahs, high ceilings and collection of colonial antiques Indisch feels timeless whilst still managing to evoke memories of Ceylon. The ground floor of this two-storey property is mainly open plan; rooms blending into each other as they encircle a paved courtyard with fountain that bubbles and tinkles away in the background. The villa is ideally suited to families; a large flat grassy lawn surrounds the house, there’s a shallow area in the pool for paddlers and also a children’s play area with swings and slides. The rock pools on the beach, the crabs darting in and out of their holes, and the soft sand will provide further amusement for little ones. For those less inclined to expend their energy, the soft towel-covered loungers on the lawn and gentle ripples in the azure swimming pool are invites enough.

With a team of 12 staff including a couple of chefs and a manager, Indisch is run hotel-fashion: meals and drinks are selected from a menu and priced accordingly. Whilst your every need and comfort has been thought of at Indisch – there’s even a restored vintage Mercedes car that can drive you in splendour to Galle – it is the property’s giant proportions and generous spaces that are the real luxuries here. Its location on a curve of coastline is also special: unobstructed views look out either towards the ocean waves crashing dramatically onto the rocks, or across a small cove frequented by stilt-fishermen, where colourful catamarans moored on the beach are a constant reminder of where you are.

Indisch is entered via a verandah which takes you into a grand foyer typically dressed with fresh cut flowers to welcome guests inside. Directly beyond the foyer an elegant fountain forms the centrepiece of a paved inner courtyard. Views out over the gardens, pool and ocean can be glimpsed from here through the bright and airy living areas on the opposite side of the courtyard.

To the left of the foyer, beside the elegant wooden staircase, is a cosy air conditioned study with TV, DVD player and home theatre system; the effects of which can be enjoyed from squashy sofas topped with cushions. There’s also a desk in here and a pair of doors that lead onto the rear verandah. Wi-fi internet can be accessed throughout the house.

To the right of the foyer is a modern kitchen, laundry room and staff area whilst to the front, via hallways either side of the courtyard, are the living and dining areas, which are decorated with a blend of Sri Lankan and Indonesian antiques, artefacts and period furnishings as well as modern artwork on the walls. To the front, through white louvred doors, is a deep verandah stretching the entire width of the house, where you can relax on colonial-style white wicker chairs overlooking the garden and sea. The dining room looks out across the side garden and seats ten for formal indoor meals at its centrally located table. Out on the verandah a second table offers an alternative dining location – perfect for lazy breakfasts. There are also two guest bathrooms on the ground floor.

The five bedrooms – all with ceiling fans, air conditioning and four-poster beds draped in soft mosquito netting – are on the first floor. To the front are the two master suites, both of which are expansive and luxuriously fitted with king-size beds, writing desks, dining tables, safes and plenty of wardrobe space. Each master bathroom is equipped with powerful rain shower, free-standing tub and twin washbasins as well as twin French windows opening onto a wide front balcony that magnificently overlooks the sea.

The other three bedrooms (one king and two twins) also offer ensuite bathrooms with powerful showers. The king-bedded room and one of the twins open onto the rear balcony with views over the garden and driveway below. Both have walk-in cupboard storage, a small table and chairs and are a little more spacious than the side twin room which is better suited to children.
