Rumah Ipanema

Rumah Ipanema is located on the edge of the popular and rural district of Canggu, with picturesque rice fields to the front and rear of the villa and Berawa beach, with its impressive surf and deserted sands, just a short stroll away. The ambience at Rumah Ipanema is tranquil; guests can enjoy their days relaxing in private and comfortable living areas around the inviting 17m lap pool. A chef and two housekeepers are on hand to take care of your every need; shopping for you and preparing meals in the sleekly designed polished concrete kitchen (meals are selected from a suggestion menu, provisions on guest account). With WiFi internet and a large flat-screen TV, plus home entertainment system in the open-air living and dining area it’s the ideal setting to lay back and groove.

It would appear the owners switched from Bosa Nova to Jimi Hendrix for inspiration when designing the interior; the theme is purple haze throughout. All the chandeliers, lamps, blinds and cushions are uncompromisingly purple, as are finishing touches such as feathers, pebbles, painted bamboo and even beads draped around the necks of Buddha statues. It’s bold but contrasts well and adds warmth to the chic industrial polished concrete structure.

This villa will work well as a party pad for a group or a base for a large family. The five spacious bedrooms are spread over two storeys (which is as tall as villas get in Bali where one can’t build higher than the coconut trees). The first floor bedrooms enjoying rice field views on both sides. They all boast well-designed ensuites, with the ground floor bathrooms incorporating lush gardens.

Completed in 2009, Rumah Ipanema - just like the girl from Ipanema in the Bosa Nova classic – is certainly young and lovely, and everyone who passes through is inclined to go “a-a-ah!”

Rumah Ipanema’s living, dining and kitchen areas are housed in a high-roofed, wooden-floored, open-air building at one end of the villa’s 17m pool. Two giant L-shaped sofas sit adjacent, built into the sleek polished concrete structure of the lounge. Neatly arranged upon them is probably the largest collection of purple cushions in Asia! In front is a large flat-screen television complete with home entertainment system. Up a level at the rear of the room is an oak dining table which sits eight and matches the console and coffee tables nearby. Opposite is a well-equipped and stylish kitchen moulded in polished concrete a slightly darker colour than the walls, behind which a second, larger kitchen is hidden within the staff quarters. One side of the living area has water running down its slate wall into a glass-sided fish pond – home to a number of carp, water plants and a large stone Buddha.

The living room looks out over the length of the pool to a large purple daybed situated in an attractive balé (gazebo) at the opposite end. Wood decking extends along the poolside, off which large glass sliding doors lead into two bedrooms. A staircase in between ascends to two further bedrooms.

These four spacious bedrooms all share the same characteristics in that their floors, walls, bed bases and side tables are all sculpted from polished concrete. At night, cream curtains drawn across the windows and walls and around the beds, coupled with attractive lighting, creates a soft ambience. All the bedrooms have glass-shelved wardrobes, safes and daybeds. The ensuites are worth writing home about; all boast uniquely sculpted double baths in polished concrete. The ground floor bathrooms are large with lush gardens beside the baths, double vanities and standing showers – three in each ensuite! Upstairs the bathrooms enjoy views across the rice fields and one opens onto a balcony with another huge concrete moulded sofa. The fifth bedroom is situated behind the balé and is considerably smaller than the others, yet still has a walk-in wardrobe and outdoor ensuite. All five bedrooms are air conditioned.
