Villa Jago

Absolute beachfront villas are rare in Bali and this one, standing proud on the seashore near Canggu, is an absolute stunner. Jago means rooster in the Indonesian language and in the manner of its namesake this cool modern pad struts its stuff beside the ocean like an architectural cockerel, inspiring calls of admiration from every man and chick on the beach.

The striking and peaceful setting combined with Jago’s ‘art-is-architecture’ design, smooth plumage and high-tech facilities make this flat-roofed palace of luxury a wonderful place to be. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine anywhere better than standing on the terrace, welcome drink in hand, gazing out over the waves. Inside Villa Jago you’ll find air conditioned bedrooms, sunken sitting areas, a mini home theatre, a fully-equipped gym, a terrace that extends nearly the entire length of the upper floor, retro-seventies’ dining furniture, and statues and paintings of cockerels everywhere.

What’s more, this proud rooster of a villa fair crows to be relaxed in. Including the large cushioned daybed behind the pool, the various seating arrangements on the upstairs terrace and the indoor living areas there are a total of eight different areas to stretch out and do whatsoever you choose – and that doesn’t include the jacuzzi! Positioned like cock’s comb above the ground the infinity pool makes a bold statement and is a main feature of the house. Constructed in rich black stone, the 20m pool juts perpendicularly towards the ocean. With so many places to relax and play, Villa Jago is perfectly suited for groups looking for a funky out-of-town party pad, as well as for families (a child’s room adjoins one of the bedrooms) who like lots of space as well as a beach to explore, complete with a sheltered lagoon for swimming.

The staff will do the grocery shopping for you on account and prepare simple meals, or a professional chef can be brought in (extra charge) to accommodate fine dining needs. With its large beachside garden and private velvety lawn in the lee of a small sand dune, Villa Jago is the ideal venue for an event or wedding; guaranteed to make you cock-a-hoop!

The contemporary design of Villa Jago is masculine, minimalist and funky. Projecting a grey and white colour theme, materials include black granite, marble and Indian slate. On ground level is an air conditioned gym and a huge daybed within a semi-open-air lounging area. From here, cantilevered stairs lead up to the living area with its million-dollar ocean view.

Two thirds of the upper floor is devoted to indoor and outdoor living, with an 18m-wide concertina wall of glass doors, offering the choice of sea breezes or air conditioned comfort. The open-plan living room incorporates a horseshoe-shaped relaxation zone next to horizontal windows with views of the balé banjar (village meeting place) and temple. There are two indoor dining areas; one is sunken – tatami-style – with a white marble table for six, while the other is furnished with a wooden table, flanked by six, retro-style cocoon chairs, imported from Italy. Next to this is a well-equipped kitchen, with a bar and pneumatic white plastic stools accessorised with cowhide. To one side, a cosy alcove serves as a mini home theatre with a 42-inch satellite-channel TV/ DVD player and surround sound. The room is adorned with quirky knick-knacks, statues of roosters, a driftwood sculpture of a cow, and cult film artwork. The wide balcony-terrace is sheltered by a roof and furnished with chairs, loungers and outdoor dining for six.

The large master suite, on the upper floor, is dominated by a four-poster king-size bed. It is equipped with a 37-inch TV/DVD player and decorated with graphics depicting famous Hollywood kisses. Doors open onto a breezy balcony from which one can jump into the pool. The stylish bathroom is fitted with open-air twin showers and outdoor jacuzzi accessible from both balcony and bathroom via an intriguing corridor. There are two more bedrooms on the ground level, each with king-size beds, dressing areas and ensuite bathrooms with walk-in rain showers and black slate non-slip floors. One of these rooms connects to a child’s bedroom with a 120cm-wide bed. All bedrooms are air conditioned.

The elevated 20m pool is a stunning feature within the minimalist garden, with an expansive velvety smooth lawn that rolls upwards to meet the beach.
