The Jewel

If you’ve ever examined a map of Bali, you will have observed that at the base of this diamond-shaped island is a peninsula, which dangles from a narrow isthmus like a gold pendant upon a chain. The isthmus is the location of the airport and the beautiful Jimbaran Bay, while the pendant is a towering limestone plateau known as ‘The Bukit’, meaning ‘hill’ – Bali’s most upmarket location. Follow the bougainvillea-strewn road from the airport up to an ancient temple called Goa Gong and an elite housing estate of sumptuous residences. At an elevation of 150m above sea level, this one of the highest points of the Bukit, and from here you will see the island’s southern coastline and central highlands laid out before you like Google Earth. Enter The Jewel, a hidden treasure designed to maximise this extraordinary multifaceted view. Wander through the four, richly-coloured, gem-themed bedrooms with bathrobes to match and names that have a real ring to them – Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby and Amethyst; jump into the sparkling infinity pool and you will find yourself on the edge of the world. A precious feature of The Jewel is the dedicated spa room, where couples can enjoy simultaneous massages, traditional therapies and rose-petalled baths in a soaking tub under the stars while watching (but not hearing) the distant planes taking off and landing – way, way below. Add to this a spacious living and dining room with concertina doors that open to the cool fresh breezes, a feature kitchen, air-conditioned TV room and a sunset balcony, and you’ll be jewelled. The villa may be a little detached from the action, but with a car and driver on call (included in rate) you will have the opportunity to visit all of the island’s tourist destinations, such as The Bukit’s magnificent white sand beaches, the shopping malls of Kuta and the restaurants and nightlife action of Seminyak. On the other hand, with a grocery shopping system in place (on guest account), a competent chef and a caring team of staff, you may not be able to tear yourself away from that golden setting and million dollar vista.

From the main gate of this cliff-edge property, guests enter an immense living and dining room with bi-folding doors that run along the entire front facade and open out to massive views of Bali. This multi-functional living area features high-pitched ceilings with paddle fans, a triple-settee lounge suite and a dining table for 10 guests, while an open-plan, fully-equipped main kitchen with breakfast bar and separate wine, drinks and food fridges, sits off to one side. A service kitchen, where the staff prepare meals, is accessible through a door from the main kitchen. Two ramps, one ascending and one descending, lead to the sleeping pavilion, where one master and one double room sit on each floor. Open doorways and a series of stone steps then takes guests down into the garden and infinity pool, which sits right on the cliff’s edge, complete with pool deck and eight sun loungers. The bedrooms are all named after precious jewels and are colour-themed accordingly. The Amethyst and Sapphire suites are on the first floor flanked by balconies (one large and one small respectively) and the Emerald and Ruby suites are at ground level with a terrace and direct access to the garden. All bedrooms come with air conditioning, king-size canopied beds, wooden parquet floors and a TV and DVD player: Saphire boasts a 42-inch LCD screen; Emerald a 32-inch screen and Ruby and Amethyst both have 22-inch screens. All ensuite bathrooms are equipped with walk-in showers, while the identically laid out Sapphire and Emerald master bathrooms both have terrazzo bathtubs next to full-sized windows and spectacular views. Through sliding glass doors from the dining room is a large, cushioned, balé (relaxation pavilion) next to a fishpond with views over the island. From there, descend stairs to the fully air conditioned media room and the private spa and massage room, which is serenely designed with two massage beds and an outdoor bathtub and shower. The media room has a 46-inch HD LED screen home theatre with satellite channels as well as a stereo system and a Playstation 3. A quirky guest bathroom can be found on the ground floor featuring a cave complete with a waterfall and a shower that is open to the sky, surrounded by greenery to provide a jungle feel of mystery and adventure.
