Villa Joss

At the entrance to Villa Joss, luxuriant trailing vines frame a long, covered walkway creating a jungle-like atmosphere. This impression is strengthened by the sound of water trickling from two serene Buddha sculptures, one sitting gracefully at the end of the walkway and the other reclining languidly by the swimming pool. The lawned garden surrounding the villa features an array of frangipani trees and scattered pots of lotus – very pretty when in bloom.

Inside, the sense of calm is sustained thanks to carefully selected materials such as natural-coloured marble on the floors, an extensive use of teak, and silvery-grey shingle tiles on the living pavilions’ deeply vaulted roofs. Huge, floor-to-ceiling, fold-back glass doors let the garden in and fill the villa with light. Four ensuite bedrooms (three doubles and a twin), all overlooking the 16m pool, make this villa ideal for extended families and groups

Built in 2010 Villa Joss is named after the owner’s daughter Jocelyn, who also has a painting by a renowned local artist dedicated to her in the Joss Suite. Throughout, distinctive Balinese art adds a splash of colour to the villa which otherwise is decorated a very neutral but soothing palette of creams and browns.

For those seeking stimulation of a more technological kind, the villa has an abundance of big-screen TVs and, if music is your thing, tune into the Bose sound system which is wired throughout the common areas of the villa. There’s also a small collection of books and board games available, as well as complimentary WiFi access.

Villa Joss has a full complement of friendly and attentive staff. If you feel that cooking is not for you then make full use of the villa’s chef, but if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Jamie Oliver the staff will be more than happy to grocery shop for you (on guest account) and then the kitchen is all yours! Evening barbeques by the pool preceded by sundowners in the jacuzzi? Why not?

In its traditional residential setting, with the beach nearby and sophisticated Seminyak within a short drive, Joss is very definitely a family-friendly villa; ideal for those wanting to get away from it all, but not too far away.

Villa Joss consists of three pavilions set around a 16x4m pool. The single storey living pavilion contains an open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen area, where guests have the option of enjoying air conditioned comfort or sliding back the floor-to-ceiling glass doors for some tropical open-air living cooled by ceiling fans. The comfortable, uber-stylish leather lounge suite and chrome arc lamp make this a good spot for socialising or just relaxing with a good book. The teak and burnished steel dining table has seating for eight and the guest kitchen is very well equipped with large fridge, microwave and hob as well as a sleek black granite breakfast bar. Tucked just behind here is the staff kitchen.

The media pavilion, at the corner of the property, has comfy, colourful sofas set in front of a 45-inch flat-screen TV (TVs are also found in all bedrooms and in the outdoor balé). The fitted office area here offers plenty of space to spread out work papers for those who really have to.

The two-storey bedroom pavilion opens onto the pool. All four bedrooms are ensuite with twin vanities. The two downstairs four-poster, king-bedded rooms have the advantage of tropical, walled, garden showers as well as indoor showers and large terrazzo bathtubs. The bathrooms’ glass walls make you feel as though you are outside. Upstairs, a third king-bedded room and a twin room have large ensuites with showers, finished to the same standard as the rest of the villa in natural marble (treated to be non-slip) wood and glass. These upstairs rooms share a large terrace that runs the length of the pavilion. All the bedrooms have comfortable daybeds, beautiful cabinetry (plenty of storage space) and are furnished very tastefully.

In the garden, two sets of triple sunbeds, each with umbrellas, overlook the pool. The adjacent jacuzzi has an integral drinks table and umbrella, the perfect spot for a pre-prandial Bintang (local beer) or cocktail. Next to the pool is a spacious, elongated balé (relaxation pavilion) with a blue-cushioned daybed big enough for the whole family and a dining table ideally situated for barbeques and alfresco lunches. Here you can enjoy a massage (on account) or lie back and watch a movie.
