Villa Kakatua
Kakatua is perfectly equipped for families. One of its four bedrooms has a huge bed encased in a beautiful antique Javanese frame, big enough for four small kids (or indeed three wives). Either way if they are not all getting on you can banish them to their rooms to watch DVD’s whilst you enjoy the sport on the satellite channels in the living room. With the spacious garden and a good selection of pool toys to keep the children happy (even a safety fence for the pool), parents can relax.
The charming mix of indoor/outdoor living space allows freedom to chose where to spend your day: chatting over a meal in the thatched dining balé (gazebo), dozing on a daybed at the poolside, playing water polo with the kids or having a quiet read in the airy living room while listening to your iPod (docking station supplied). When you feel the desire to stretch your legs, a visit next door to the fascinating ‘museum’ Hotel Tugu is a must, and Canggu beach is virtually on your doorstep too. A stroll along the sand at sunset, topped off with a refreshing beer at The Beach House on Echo Beach might just be the way to finish a perfect day.
There’s really no reason to venture much further than this as a professional team of friendly staff are on hand look after your every need, preparing delicious meals from a suggestion menu (provisions on guest account). However, should you wish to spread your wings a little further, the bright lights of Seminyak or the cultural delights of Ubud are very accessible thanks to the provision of a car and driver.

Villa Kakatua blends traditional Balinese architecture with modern comfort across its four separate structures, including the poolside balé and dining balé, both set within the beautifully-maintained garden. A larger pavilion is home to two guest bedrooms while the main pavilion houses the kitchen, living area and two master bedrooms. Of course you’ll need an umbrella to get from one to another should you be staying during the rainy season, but this pavilion-based, open-air living really does typify Bali style.
Antique wooden furniture and carvings are tastefully arranged throughout, including a television cabinet in the living area hiding a 22-inch TV, with satellite channels and DVD player, along with a stereo system. Two sets of traditional Balinese wood doors lead from here into the kitchen and the master bedroom. The kitchen is tucked away and a little small and dated, although it is well equipped and, in reality, is only used by the staff. The master bedroom’s four-poster queen bed looks out through patio doors onto the garden while the room itself is equipped with a small television and DVD player as well as a charming outdoor bathroom. Here a standing shower and terrazzo bathtub enjoy views of the star lit night sky.
An open staircase zigzags from the living area up to a second bedroom identical to its twin below except with full-length sliding windows opening onto the garden and a smaller, enclosed ensuite without a bath.
The dining balé houses an antique dining table with long benches (seats eight) and, beyond this, a verandah, complete with sofas, table and chairs, fronts the two guest bedrooms. The first is nicely decorated with a queen four-poster bed, a larger television than in the other bedrooms, DVD player and iPod dock. Its ensuite is open air with a standing shower only, as is the ensuite next door in the second guest bedroom. This room boasts the biggest bed in Bali! Two twin mattresses are placed side by side inside a beautiful antique wood frame. The structure almost entirely fills the room and makes it ideal as a children’s dormitory. All the bedrooms at Kakatua are air conditioned.
