Kamala Hills Naka 12 (James Bond Villa)

Tucked away in the hills above Kamala beach, the four-bedroom Kamala Hills Naka Villa 12 offers a cool, fun retreat for families. This modern, bright villa features 'full-frontal' exposure to its jungle surrounds, with every room across its two levels opening out to the lush greenery of the facing hill. A 16.5m swimming pool stretches between the villa and jungle along its spacious terrace.

Life revolves around the pool and terrace during the day, with cool dips in the pool interspersed with sunbathing and relaxing on the bright outdoor rattan sofas. Inside, the spacious double-height living area with a flat-screen TV and Xbox player opens out completely to the pool, or the sliding doors may be drawn and the air-conditioning turned on for added cooling. One master suite, on the main level, features a trap-door that reveals a secret entrance to the pool -- great fun for the kids (and adults, too!) -- that inspired the villa's alternate name, The James Bond Villa. The remaining three bedrooms, including another master bedroom, are on the upper floor.

Set in a secure private estate with just a sprinkling of neighbouring villas, the only sounds heard here are the waterfall trickles of the infinity pool overflow and the jungle rhythms. The design, over two levels, is a fresh and modern with colourful paintings and plush furnishings keeping things fun and funky. There are windows galore across the entire front, including the stair landing, which makes the villa a feel more like a bright, but enclosed patio than an interior space.

Though daily cleaning services are provided, this villa is self-catering and a bright western-style kitchen makes this a pleasure. The management company will assist in sourcing supplies if needed, as well as help organise car hire, taxi service, even in-villa massages, for an extra charge. Car hire is recommended due to the villa's out-of-the-way location, though it is just a few minutes' drive down the hill to Kamala Beach and a good range of dining options.

The downstairs master suite must be mentioned first because of its very quirky, one-of-a-kind feature. Set just steps away from the swimming pool, this bedroom has a bright red floor mat set at its front corner. Look under the mat and a hidden trapdoor is revealed. Peek under the trapdoor and you'll find ... the swimming pool. Yes, the pool has a secret, underwater tunnel!. A short swim through an underwater corridor takes you directly into the pool's deep end -- goggles recommended! This master suite is also, of course, a place to sleep, with a king-sized bed and a generous sized ensuite bathroom with a double vanity set and shower.

Three more bedrooms are found upstairs. At one end of the connecting corridor is a master suite, complete with a large balcony with jungle views, a king-size bed, walk-in wardrobe and a large ensuite bathroom with shower. Next to this is a spacious bathroom with shower that the two smaller bedrooms on this level share. These two bedrooms, great for the kids, feature queen-size beds and a shared balcony reached by sliding glass doors in each room. Each of these rooms is sparsely furnished, yet bright and comfortable.

Heading back downstairs, via the striking stairwell landing with window blocks that form a towering, two-storey column of glass, you arrive in the living room. Double-height and with floor-to-ceiling windows offering full views of the pool terrace and jungle, this area is comfortably furnished with a large tan sofa and chair set. Entertainment delights include a flat-screen TV with DVD player and an Xbox game console. Next to this is a dining area with a vivid white eight-seater table set by an oversized Banksy painting that has a little fun with the characters of the movie Pulp Fiction. For some post-meal relaxation, a neat, nest-like wicker chair hangs next to the terrace.

The nicely equipped western kitchen features a granite-topped bar counter facing windows that slide open for fresh air and views of the verdant jungle.
