Baan Kata Keeree

Perched on a hill overlooking the bay at Kata Beach, this six-bedroom villa oozes charm. The property was originally a family holiday home and the Bangkok-based owners have managed to create a homely feel without guests feeling intrusive or out of place. Asian artefacts, antiques and decorative pieces, clearly the passion of the owner’s wife, adorn the rooms as do her paintings, giving the villa both character and individuality. Often staying in modern villas can be aesthetically pleasing but a largely soulless experience, but this is not the case at Baan Kata Keeree, where the attention to detail helps bring the property to life.

The villa has a stunning 180-degree view of the ocean and Kata beach, with a raised sun deck providing the perfect platform for sunset drinks or an evening BBQ. Guests can feast on the view during mealtimes at the long casual table on the terrace. To complete the experience, the villa is fully serviced, with a talented chef on hand for both local and international dishes.

Bedrooms are generously sized, well equipped and bright and breezy with views of the pool and ocean to the front and the ponds and fountains of the garden to the rear. Although the property itself does not cover a particularly large area, the uninterrupted view of the coastline creates the illusion of more space – from the deck it feels like you’re floating above the ocean. The swimming pool is a nice size and overflows onto a sunken jacuzzi deck below, where a small shady picnic table provides a breezy respite from the midday heat.

At the back of the property a small gym will keep the active happy while the games room next door, stocked with everything from puzzles to Playstation, should keep the young entertained. The owners have young children themselves and have ensured that they’re well occupied, with a good choice of both indoor and outdoor activities. With the beach so close, it’s easy to spend half the day snorkelling or enjoying the surf before heading home for lunch followed by games in the pool or electronic fun in the games room. The perfect recipe for a family holiday.

Entering the property, guests pass over stepping-stones above lotus pools of carp, descending past Buddhist statues towards the main living areas that are designed around the swimming pool. Here a large dining and sitting area with connecting kitchen look out over one side of the pool area and ocean beyond. Most meals, however, will probably be taken at the long table on the terrace that leads out to the impressive sun deck commanding the best views of Kata Bay. Below the deck is a terrace - perfect for a shady Thai massage (extra). All rooms have that home-from-home feel that runs through the property; comfortable and unpretentious, with shells, ceramics and colourful art to add to the friendly beach house feel. DVDs are available to watch on a decent-sized flat-screen TV and the adjacent guest kitchen sports all the mod-cons including wine fridge, dishwasher, and microwave - two espresso machines ensure that serious caffeine junkies won’t go wanting. Unless guests really want to cook, it’s recommended leaving the chores to the very able staff who also do the shopping.

On the opposite side of the pool from the living area, the king master bedroom and a king guest room are bordered by a two-floor block comprising four more bedrooms (three kings and one twin), all with ocean views to the front and garden views to the rear. Each bedroom is ensuite (bath and shower), air conditioned and comes with fridge, TV and small music system with iPod docks. A selection of books is on hand for those who forgot to pack the holiday read. The master bedroom looks out over the pool terrace and the magnificent view of the bay and benefits from lots of natural light. It features a computer for those travelling without laptops (there’s free WiFi throughout). Next door the blue room has a less impressive view but is a good size and three steps from the pool. The four rooms in the two-storey block all mirror each other with the top two commanding the best views. Each has a desk with a selection of books. If a seventh bedroom is needed, there’s a spare room at the back of the property above the small but well-equipped gym which is a little out of the way but offers a queen-size bed, ensuite bathroom and small balcony. Kids are well catered for with an air conditioned games room - you may find it difficult to tear them away from the clutches of Playstation.
