Villa Kavya

‘Kavya’ means poetry, and this villa's crisp design could easily inspire a Haiku. Created by celebrated Indonesian architect, Sekar, guests enjoy a contemporary take on traditional Balinese living, making this a versatile property that appeals as much as a family retreat as it does a party pad. The wide, central lawn serves equally well as a kid's playground or a place to celebrate and there's a 17.5m pool for serious swimmers plus a 6m option for the kids to splash around in, so everyone gets to enjoy the extravagant amenities.

A combination of communal and private spaces; outdoor and indoor, wet and dry, plus a varied in-villa menu, including choices for kids; the meals skillfully prepared by an experienced personal chef (provisions on guest account), mean you're unlikely to want to move far beyond the walled, landscaped grounds. Three staff take excellent care of you, the chef doubling as an informative on-site manager (there’s also a manager on call), and a comprehensive information guide to fill any gaps, covering everything from laundry services to massage and restaurant recommendations.

When you tire of lounging in the sun, or relaxing in the hammock strung beneath the small pool balé (gazebo), the dedicated, air conditioned TV room (satellite and DVD) offers a comfortable retreat from the heat, or you can head to one of the four cool, spacious bedrooms and snooze in well-appointed peace. For outdoor bathing enthusiasts, this villa boasts one of the largest and loveliest garden bathrooms we’ve come across. If the lucky couple in the upstairs master suite invite you for sunset cocktails on their wide private terrace you’ll enjoy crimson skies to die for. Then you can descend for a delicious meal before collapsing on the soft, wide L-shaped sofa to while away the evening in satisfied comfort.

Should you feel the urge to explore, roaring Berawa Beach is a ten minute walk away through the terraced paddy fields (you can hear the waves from the garden), while shopping trips and lively evenings out are easily manageable with sophisticated Seminyak being only a 10km drive away.

A black brick entrance fronts Villa Kavya’s parking area with a tall wooden door opening directly onto the open-sided lounge and lawned garden beyond. A guest washroom sits to the right and wide stepping stones across a welcoming water feature lead left to a double bedroom in its own annex. Inside, a central wooden king-size bed faces a recessed window seat overlooking a small courtyard. An opaque glass door from the walk-in dressing area opens into a spacious outdoor bathroom with rain shower, set in a pleasant walled garden.

The second bedroom (twin-bedded) is to the left of the living area and has a built-in desk and shelving, floor-to-ceiling windows with black-out drapes, and a walk-in dressing area with ample storage. The covered, outdoor bathroom has a rain shower with wooden decking.

The third ground floor bedroom is linked to the twin via a terrace that extends to a shaded relaxation area and daybed alongside the lawn. Inside, there's a king-size bed and walk-through dressing area. Another glass door reveals a huge indoor-outdoor bathroom with covered rain shower plus a shady garden terrace that's home to an indulgent Balinese stone bath tub.

The first floor master bedroom is accessed via a flight of wooden steps from the living area. This expansive room has a contemporary canopied four-poster king-size bed and a large dressing area plus an ensuite bathroom with rain shower looking out over the rice fields through floor-to-ceiling windows (opaque glass in the bottom half affords privacy). From the bedroom, doors open onto a covered terrace with large, comfortable loungers and glimpses of the sea. To the left, this terrace extends onto a grassed roof over the living space.

The living/dining area faces the garden and the villa’s two pools which are divided by wooden decking and a small balé where a tempting hammock hangs. A generous L-shaped sofa and daybed surround a 'tree-trunk' coffee table in this completely open-fronted room. To one end, a square eight-seater dining table is backed by a beautiful wooden breakfast bar and modern kitchen with high quality fittings. Off the dining area is the air conditioned TV room with a comfortable white sofa nestled in front of a flat-screen TV with DVD and satellite.
