Kikili Beach

If a house could have arms and welcome you, then Kikili Beach would have you in the warmest embrace from the moment you walked through the bright orange gate. Colourful, vibrant and bursting with life this chic one-bedroom beach house just south of famous Unawatuna Bay is the most sensational spot for a delightful couple’s escape. Set in a grassy garden shaded by palms, the house is unusually built from granite; rough hewn grey walls add interesting texture to the house and complement its zingy orange and vivid blue colour scheme along with the beautifully ageing clay tiles on the floor.

That a lot of love and hard work has gone into making Kikili Beach a home is obvious, and the owners’ sparkling energy shines brightly throughout. Huge cushions, lampshades and tablecloths are adorned in a kaleidoscope of colours and a variety of bold designs that are both fun and tasteful; photos, pictures and paintings provide a cheerful mood; whilst a selection of hand-picked antiques, books, games and CDs boost its homely appeal. Kikili celebrates life through comfort, colour and conviviality, and manages to feel enchantingly like home – albeit a magical home in the tropics, only footsteps from the warm turquoise embrace of the sea.

Although its situation close to an excellent swimming beach is heaven enough, numerous lavish lounging locations – a romantic swing seat, an ambiant ambalama or a deep veranda – coupled with a turquoise swimming pool shimmering in the garden, mean that you will never be short of somewhere to make the most of the spectacular views; sunsets at Kikili are sensational, especially when the palm-topped silhouette of Unawatuna Bay is enhanced by the changing colours in the sky. Add to this the expertise of housekeeper and chef Kumara, who creates excellent dishes (groceries on guest account) from the bright blue kitchen and whose gentle presence is as much a part of the experience as the house itself, and you have a truly unforgettable retreat.

The entrance to Kikili takes you straight into the living room which is the heart of the house. This appealing room is furnished with a squashy coral- and white-striped sofa that gazes across the verandah and out towards the sea. Antique cabinets hold china, glassware and books whilst a CD player with selection of both chilled and upbeat tunes sets the tone. In common with the floors throughout the property, the living room floor is clay tiled, blanketed here and there with inviting, warm rugs. To the right of the living room is a bright blue circular kitchen that, although small, features everything you might need –even stocks of wine!

The bedroom, to the left of the Living room, overlooks the garden and has a four-poster king-size bed dressed in silky soft linen. At night a heavy velvet curtain is theatrically swept across in place of a door to the sitting room and you have the choice of air conditioning or a ceiling fan to keep cool. Shelves are filled with a wonderful selection of books that offer the potential for filling many hours of the day. The bathroom is ensuite with power shower and personal collection of toiletries.

Directly in front of the sitting room are double doors onto a deep verandah. It has spectacular views of the sea and is a wonderful place to while away the hours as the ocean plays a constant melody in the background. To one end of the verandah is a pale blue concrete L-shaped sofa brimming with cushions. At the other end is a dining table for eight that also overlooks the garden and sea. In between are two floral-cushioned lounge chairs that recline peacefully in front of a small, tucked away bar.

In the walled garden, and making the most of the sea views, is a coconut-thatched ambalama (pavilion) adorned with comfortable cushions. It’s a great spot for yoga and a mellow place to chill at any time of the day. There’s also a gorgeous ocean-view swing seat that sways as if you are actually out on the sea yourself, and a couple of sun loungers on the lawn offer yet more idyllic options for rest and relaxation.
