Kimbulagala Watte (Crocodile Rock)
Kimbula means crocodile and gala means rock in Sinhala, and the property was named not only for the creatures occasionally spotted in the lake but also for their resemblance to the huge rock around which the infinity swimming pool is so craftily built. As the rock sensationally heats up during the day you can launch yourself from it into the pool’s inviting depths for an invigorating icy immersion.
Overlooking the swimming pool is a generous wraparound veranda that’s as great for dining as it is for lazily relaxing and enjoying the natural beauty of this wildlife-filled location. Inside the house the homely open-plan living room offers further space for chilling out whilst the full-to-the-brim book cabinet signifies what this house is all about: reading novel after novel in these peaceful surrounds, or sitting out on the deep veranda and finding the harmony to write your own. ‘Inspirational’ is therefore one way to describe Kimbulagala Watte; couples, families and groups of friends will find it hard not to achieve true peace and privacy here.
Although three-bedroomed Kimbulagala Watte is beautifully furnished with homely accessories and striking antiques, the emphasis is on simplicity. The kitchen might be excellently equipped – and the lovely housekeeper a talented cook (groceries on guest account except breakfast which is included in the rate) – but there are no TVs or DVD players, WiFi connections or iPods to keep you amused. After a week or two cut off from the outside world, this house is guaranteed to send you hurtling back into it refreshed and ready for anything.

A pathway dissecting a bright green lawn leads you into the house across an elongated veranda and through a wide embellished doorway. Immediately you arrive into a hugely spacious living area with high timber ceiling, cool polished cement floor and multiple doors onto a lake-view dining terrace that leads to the garden and swimming pool.
The open-plan living room features cushioned sofas positioned to admire the views, a small dining table for four and a few cabinets, one of them filled to the brim with books. To the rear is a fully-equipped western style kitchen area finished in smooth black cement with bar shelf to the front to allow cooks to share in the views and be sociable while they work. A passageway at the back of the kitchen leads to the side of the house via a double-sided utility / storage area.
To the front of the living room is an L-shaped veranda with dining table for six overlooking the infinity swimming pool, the crocodile rock and the lake. Relaxed rattan chairs and a hammock are placed to the front of this veranda which continues to wrap around the side of the house to the front door, thus making the most of the lake and garden views. A fan-cooled built-in concrete sofa furnished with stripy cushions is found along this side veranda and is a really comfy get-away-from-it-all reading spot.
The front section of the veranda is shared with the master bedroom. Cooled by twin ceiling fans, this expansive bedroom (also accessed from the living room) has a high roof plus a four-poster double bed, an antique writing desk and doors that open widely onto the veranda to maximise the views. This bedroom also comes with a walk-in wardrobe / dressing room with electronic safe and fan-cooled bathroom with shower.
The two further bedrooms – a double and a twin – both open onto the living room and additionally onto the side veranda. Featuring similarly high ceilings, cool cement floors and built-in concrete storage space (including an electronic safe in the double) these bedrooms are also fan-cooled and have ensuite bathrooms with showers.
