Kingsley’s Pearl
Without making any change to its original footprint, Kingsley’s Pearl’s new owners have modernised the property by fitting air conditioning in all the bedrooms and adding LCD flat-screen TVs. There’s also an air conditioned living room with a surround-sound system where the whole family can gather to watch one of a generous selection of DVDs. Kingsley’s five geographically themed bedrooms are pleasingly private and infused with the flavours of their namesake land, whilst the colonially styled living room, dining area and walkway seating spots all merge joyfully into each other so that even when peacefully reading a book, you never feel disconnected from family and friends. For a little escape, just head into the garden and lay in a hammock for a solitary sea-view snooze.
Kingsley’s Pearl is staffed with a manager, cook, maid, gardener and night security guard who provide a peaceful though cheerful presence around the villa assisted by Monty the Labrador. Provisions are charged at cost price and there’s a suggestion menu that you can pick from every morning of your stay. The staff will shop on your behalf in nearby Galle but you’re welcome to join their local market visits to see for yourself the amazing array of produce that’s on display including fabulous fish and ocean-fresh seafood.

The five bedrooms, the living areas and the kitchen each open onto a central courtyard that frames the swimming pool. A wall at the back seems to float above a fishpond and splits the courtyard in two so as to provide the public areas with privacy from the main entrance to the house.
Located along the eastern side of the courtyard the bedrooms are each named after a country or continent. Fabrics, photographs, maps, paintings and ornaments all serve to personalise each of these rooms in accordance with their namesakes, and all bedrooms come with air conditioning, ceiling fans and LCD cable-channel TVs.
Ceylon, the master bedroom, opens directly onto the garden via a cushioned veranda and is the only bedroom to have a sea view. Similar to the next largest bedroom, Africa, it has a king-sized four-poster bed, a writing desk, a wardrobe, an electronic safe, an ensuite bathroom with twin sinks and multiple doors onto a secluded side garden. Africa connects with a small double-bedded room with ensuite bathroom perfect for sleeping the kids.
Opening off the courtyard close to the entrance of the house are two further bedrooms: Europe comes with twin beds that can be pushed together to form a double, and an ensuite bathroom with shower whilst Asia, next-door, is an Oriental-inspired double bedroom decorated with parasols and figurines. This room does not have its own bathroom.
The quadrangle of corridors around the swimming pool is furnished here and there with cushioned loungers, planters’ chairs and circular tables for informal dining. Set in front of the ‘floating’ wall is the open-plan dining area with a table for ten that looks directly over the swimming pool to the sea beyond. A ceiling fan keeps diners cool.
Between bedrooms Ceylon and Africa lies Australia – the main living area – where you’ll find retro striped sofas, a surround-sound LCD cable-channel TV, a DVD player and cupboards stacked with books and movies.
On the western side of the house is the fully equipped kitchen and behind this a laundry and storage area.
